Job summary
This Apprenticeship role is ideal for individuals looking to begin or develop a career in administration within the NHS. Ophthalmology is one of the Trusts largest services, offering a diverse range of sub-specialties and processes. Gaining experience in this department will provide the successful candidate with a strong foundation of knowledge and skills, supporting future progression opportunities within the Trust.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Responding to patient queries via telephone in a professional and compassionate manner
Supporting the daily cashing up of clinic activity
Booking patient appointments in line with Trust guidelines
Maintaining strict adherence to Information Governance policies
Providing general administrative support to ensure the smooth running of the service
Main duties of the job
Within this role, you will develop the ability to prioritise your workload effectively while building strong organisational skills and adaptability in a fast-paced healthcare environment. The position encompasses a broad range of administrative responsibilities that are essential to the smooth delivery of Ophthalmology services.
Key duties include receiving and accurately inputting referrals, managing emails from clinicians and service users, validating waiting lists, undertaking clinical coding, and supporting the cashing up of clinics. You will regularly encounter situations that require effective problem-solving and time management; however, guidance and support will always be available to help you succeed.
General administrative responsibilities will also involve communicating with patients both over the phone and face to face. This may include booking and rearranging appointments, responding to enquiries, and providing a professional, courteous service that reflects the Trusts commitment to high-quality patient care.
Protected time will be allocated to support your apprenticeship programme, enabling you to build your knowledge, strengthen your skill set, and progress confidently in your role.

The Eye Department is predominantly based at St James University Hospital, Leeds but we also offer services to patients at Seacroft Hospital and Wharfedale Hospital. We are the biggest outpatient department in the Trust.. There are 29 consultants in the wider Ophthalmology Department. The team also trains Ophthalmic specialist trainees from the region. We have recently moved into a new outpatient department which has provided us which much more space for patient
