Main duties of the job
The
Ophthalmology Failsafe Officer plays a critical role in safeguarding patients
by ensuring no one is lost to follow-up across high-risk ophthalmology
pathways.
You
will be part of the Ophthalmology administrative and operational team at St
Jamess University Hospital, working closely with consultants, clinical nurse
specialists, service managers, booking teams and data teams. The role sits at
the heart of patient tracking and pathway management.
Key
responsibilities include:
Proactively
monitoring patient tracking lists (PTLs) and failsafe reports across services
such as medical retina and glaucoma
Identifying
patients who are overdue or at risk of delay and taking timely action to
resolve this
Liaising
with clinical and booking teams to arrange appropriate follow-up or escalate
concerns
Maintaining
accurate records and ensuring data quality across multiple systems
Supporting
audits, reporting and service improvement initiatives
Contributing
to the development and refinement of failsafe processes and workflows
The
role involves managing a high-volume caseload, regularly reviewing large
patient cohorts, and working to clear backlogs within agreed timeframes. You
will be expected to work methodically, prioritise effectively, and meet
defined turnaround targets to ensure patients are tracked and rebooked
promptly.
