Job summary

The post is a two year fixed term contract providing core optometry activity in our refraction, contact lens and Low Vision Aid clinics primarily based in our Main eye clinic in Gledhow wing site at St. Jamess University Hospital.

The post also provides the opportunity to experience a range of enhanced optometric roles including glaucoma, corneal, medical retina, paediatric clinics and eye casualty.

This post is suitable for hospital pre-registration optometrists who will be registered as qualified optometrists at the start of the post. The post is intended to provide experience of a range of core and enhanced optometric roles to enable progression within the wider Hospital Eye Service (HES) to more complex roles at the end of the two year contract.

A degree in Optometry, General Optical Council (GOC) registration and previous experience as a Hospital pre-registration optometrist in a range of core optometric roles is essential.

Main duties of the job

This post allows you to gain experience and develop skills, during a two year fixed contract, to progress from core optometric activities to more enhanced optometric roles in the acute sector, following completion of the pre-registration year. You will assist in the delivery of a broad range of core optometric services to the highest standards of quality and care for Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and its clinics. You will develop skills in enhanced clinics with support and supervision by Specialist Optometrist colleagues. You will undertake delegated administrative responsibilities as determined by the Head of Optometry, Principal Optometrist or senior colleagues.

You may be required to examine and manage up to nine refraction patients a session, to examine and manage up to six Low Vision, dispensing or contact lens patients a session. You may be required to examine and manage under supervision up to eight patients in a range of enhanced optometric clinics.

About us

You will join our busy, friendly Optometry team working at the centralised eye department at St. Jamess University Hospital. The Optometry department consists of the Head of Optometry, Principal Optometrist, Optometrists, Specialist Optometrists, Advanced Specialist Optometrists, Pre-registration Optometrist, Senior Dispensing Opticians, Optical Services Officer and Optical Services Clerical Assistants. The Optometry department supports the Ophthalmology Department consisting of twenty eight Consultant Ophthalmologists with full supporting medical staff, specialising in anterior segment, refractive surgery, paediatrics, oculo-plastic surgery, glaucoma, uveitis, neuro-ophthalmology, medical retina and vitreo-retinal disease. Optometry services are provided at St. Jamess University Hospital and Wharfedale General Hospital. There is a large Orthoptic Department involved with the training of under-graduate orthoptic students.

10. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Clinical

1. To undertake core optometry services at LTHT. These include refraction, specialist medical contact lens management, corneal topography, visual impairment rehabilitation, toxic baseline ophthalmic screening and in-house spectacle dispensing.

2. To participate in a programme for the development of personal clinical expertise, in accordance with individual performance objectives which are agreed with the Head of Optometry, Principal Optometrist, Specialist Optometrists and Dispensing opticians. This is with a view to developing clinical knowledge and skills in order to progress to more enhanced optometric roles within the acute sector.

Administrative

1. To plan and prioritise individual workloads as delegated by the Head of Optometry, Principal Optometrist, Senior Optometrists and Dispensing opticians.

2. Responsibility for routine administrative activities within the Optometry Department as delegated by senior members of staff.

3. To work with the Head of Optometry, Principal Optometrist, Specialist Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians to ensure professional standards are achieved and maintained at all times, for the provision of highest quality hospital optometry services.

4. To contribute to planning and organisation of straightforward tasks, activities or programmes, some of which may be on going.

5. Responsibility for the monitoring of certain information and information systems as delegated by the Head of Optometry, Principal Optometrist, Specialist Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians and to ensure the accuracy of collected data from these tasks.

6. The post holder will be guided by best practice and standard operating procedures as agreed by the Head of Optometry and Principal Optometrist. Work is always supervised and results/ outcomes are assessed at regular intervals. The post holder is guided by principles and broad occupational policies, regulations and guidance provided by the Head of Optometry or other senior members of staff.

7. To maintain harmonious working relationships and efficient communication with all staff throughout the CMT, LTH Trust and external agencies.
