Job summary

We are looking for an apprentice trained joiner qualified to NVQ level 3 or equivalent to join our Estates Maintenance Team. The role will be based at the LGI however you may also be asked to work at other hospital sites and properties within our Trust (St James, Chapel Allerton, or Seacroft Hospitals). The position is 37.5 hours per week which has traditionally been worked at 7.5 hrs a day over 5 days a week, however there is the opportunity to work flexibly within the team although we do need to make sure the needs of the service come first so we can continue to provide a safe and pleasant environment for our patients, staff and visitors. You will be expected to carry out a range of joinery based maintenance tasks and the resolution of technical issues including the installation, maintenance and repair of a full range of Estates structural and fabric components. This will include the manufacture of items of joinery to a high standard using a range of woodworking machines. The ability to work at height is essential, experience in the use of powered access equipment and knowledge of issues relating to asbestos would also be an advantage.

We are looking for an individual with good communication skills and the ability to work both as part of a team and of their own initiative, they should be a good problem solver that is adaptable to change and be able to plan/organise their own workload with a pleasant manner and smart, clean appearance.

Main duties of the job

If successful you will become an important part of our maintenance team, the direct team that you will work in consists of x5 Joiners, x8 Maintenance Assistants and a floor layer however there are also other trades/colleagues that you will be expected to work alongside including painters, plasterers, bricklayers, gardeners, electricians, plumbers, engineers etc.as well as contractors and specialist.

Daily tasks vary from newer installs and planned works such as manufacturing and fitting doors & windows, fitting new locks to installing new kitchens and worktops, along with these kinds of jobs there are also the more reactive works that we carry out which range from repairing doors and ironmongery such as locks, handles, door closers etc. repairing or fitting drugs cupboards and normal cupboards, repairing flooring, repairing/refitting ceilings and installing new fixtures and fittings. We have certain building elements that require periodical PPM checks which is also be part of the role. All work is expected to be to a good standard and compliant with relevant legislation & policies etc. There will be times when you are expected to liaise with clinical staff and Estates Officers or members of the management team.

The above does involve an element of physical work such as moving and handling heavy loads such as doors and other building materials along with working at heights and occasionally in cramped spaces. You will also be required to be mobile enough to walk from job to job
