The Research and Innovation Department at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is continuing its exciting expansion. Our pre-analytical laboratories support a wide range of clinical research portfolios, including Oncology, Haematology, Cardiology and Childrens research, and we are looking for a Biomedical Support Worker Higher Level to join our team.
This is a full-time, 12-month fixed-term post, based across both the Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and St Jamess University Hospital (SJUH).
The post holder will play a key role in the processing and storage of clinical trial samples, including blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid, in accordance with specific study protocols and laboratory standard operating procedures. You will work closely with research delivery teams to ensure accurate documentation, maintain equipment and uphold high standards of quality and compliance.
Attention to detail, excellent communication skills and a commitment to maintaining accurate records are essential. You will also contribute to laboratory cleaning, equipment maintenance and process improvement initiatives.

Main duties of the job
We are looking to recruit a proactive and self-motivated individual with a keen interest in clinical research to work within the Research and Innovation Pre-Analytical Laboratory Team.
The post holder will work within a team responsible for the processing and storage of biological samples collected as part of clinical trials across a range of research areas, including Oncology, Haematology, Cardiology and Childrens research. This includes the preparation, labelling, centrifugation, aliquoting, freezing and documentation of blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid samples in line with study protocols and standard operating procedures.
The post holder will be trained in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and IATA for the safe handling and transport of clinical samples. Good computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Word and Excel, are advantageous. Excellent communication skills are essential, as the laboratory team are a key point of contact for multiple research delivery teams.
Attention to detail is vital, as GCP standards demand a high level of documentation to ensure the integrity of clinical trials. The successful candidate will be able to multitask and prioritise workloads in a busy, time-sensitive environment, demonstrate dexterity in pipetting, follow written procedures accurately, and work unsupervised once trained. They will also support the training of staff in basic laboratory skills.
