Job summary

The use of data has the potential to transform health services and patient outcomes, underpinning the next 70 years of the NHS. Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has one of the most developed electronic patient record systems in the country, and one of the richest datasets, which through research is yielding new insights into patient management strategies.

This post offers the opportunity for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to play a key role in the delivery of data research within Leeds Teaching Hospitals and its partners, working across a wide range of stakeholders, both internally and externally.

The successful applicant will need to have a customer-focused approach, a high standard of inter-personal skills, be a self-starter and have an entrepreneurial mindset. Knowledge of NHS information standards, technical expertise in the manipulation of spreadsheets and databases and significant experience of writing and using advanced T-SQL are also pre-requisites. Anyone who has experience manipulating DICOM files will be preferred.

Main duties of the job

This post holder will work in the Research and Innovation Department and will work on the extraction and de-identification of data from Trust systems for use in research projects in accordance with all required legislation. The post holder will be responsible for working with researchers to identify the datasets needed, project manage requests through the necessary approvals processes and extract the required datasets from Trust systems, ensuring all data is de-identified prior to use for research purposes. The post-holder will also support the development of the service as it evolves and initiatives that support its delivery. The post holder may work on other exciting programmes which relate to delivering and enabling research.

The post holder will be working as part of the Research Data and Informatics Team (R-DIT), a team within the R&I Clinical Support Unit (CSU). The Team provides informatics support to the CSU as well as providing de-identified datasets to researchers. The team encourages innovative thinking, and all can contribute to how it does its work. Encouragement is given for individuals to take responsibility for their own personal and professional development with the support of the Team. The team works together harmoniously with very good morale and there are no weak links. The Team prides itself on the sharing of knowledge and expertise. This area of work is exciting and dynamic with the opportunity to get involved in lots of different kinds of projects and working collaboratively with stakeholders locally, regionally, and nationally. The Team has office days and home working. Flexible hours are also available.

Job responsibilities

To ensure a robust process is implemented and executed for Leeds Teaching Hospitals to provide a data extraction service delivering accurate, tailored information to meet specific needs in support of researchers requirements for a wide range of projects.

To work with researchers from across Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, the University of Leeds and other partners to identify datasets required to execute research projects, providing a high quality of customer service.

To work with colleagues in Informatics, Information Governance and Research and Innovation to ensure that all necessary approvals are received for the release of the required datasets.

To extract and provide the required information from a range of databases to research teams in a timely manner for use in projects, supporting the Trusts ambitions to be a leader in providing high-quality, comprehensive datasets which can be used to advance patient care through research.

Providing reports to colleagues in Research and Innovation and Informatics on datasets provided, the pipeline of potential projects and forecast workload to ensure adequate resources are available to provide a high-quality and efficient service.

Leadership

Leadership of the Research Data Informatics function for the Trust

Provide regular briefings to key staff on project pipelines, workloads and any additional resource requirements that may be required to fulfil demand.

Working with others to ensure that all necessary permissions are in place before any data is released for use in research programmes.

Working with finance team to ensure involvement in projects is appropriately costed and that once completed invoices are raised.

Instruct non-information staff in the use of health data, including guidance around its uses, the logic and rules involved and its limitations.

Assist in providing a training strategy and user support to senior managers and clinicians for corporate in-house and commercial systems. This encompasses the training of staff from various professions with differing levels of experience and education and the development of training packages, using appropriate methods such as eLearning and intranet based User Guides.

Build and maintain a productive working relationship with colleagues across corporate and operational teams within the Trust and with a wide variety of external stakeholders from academic and industrial backgrounds.

Provide guidance/advice to colleagues across disciplines, internal and external on information recording and reporting implications of service change, influencing process and approach where appropriate.

Data Quality

Input into trust standards on data recording and reporting based on national policy, guidance and definitions.

Identify, monitor and report on data quality issues on trust administration & information systems.

Input into the ongoing development of trust administration & information systems with a view to requirements for research use.

Monitor national guidance advising on appropriate amendments to trust policy.

Audit of processes and systems.

IM&T Consultancy & Service Management

Assist income flows into the Trust by ensuring that work programmes are completed in a timely fashion.

Manage multiple data sources and requests and ensure a consistent, coherent output is achieved.

Performance/Analysis

Provide timely and accurate information to research collaborators in a format that is readily understood and relevant to the decision making process.

Provide proactive analyses of performance through the use of measures of activity, efficiency and data accuracy.

Provide advice on the advanced use of Excel and Access and the application of modelling and statistical tools.

Keep fully up to date with national projects and developments in order to understand the impact of changes at local level.

Ensure a timely and accurate response to any queries, both internal and external.

Propose new developments in analysis and reporting.

Interpret complex data issues for non-information staff

Assist in the development of new bespoke solutions for Information reporting. This involves taking responsibility for decisions on the configuration and development of databases and applications and includes the design and direct testing of new systems e.g. making decisions on the architecture, security and certifications and ensuring that all systems delivered comply with Trust and national data standards, data protection and any other current legislation.

Create clearly understood and value-added reports tailored to changing client needs and knowledge base. Design and develop new automated reporting processes if required to provide efficiency gains.
