Job summary

The post holder will be responsible for the leadership, co-ordination, and delivery of the cardiac physiological clinical research investigations within the Clinical Research Facility, Research and Innovation (R&I) based at Leeds General Infirmary.

In collaboration with the immediate and broader multidisciplinary team (MDT), be responsible for ensuring that high standards of clinical care planning, delivery, safety and patient satisfaction are achieved, compliant with Trust policy, study protocol requirements, local and national guidance and legislation.

Working effectively and proactively with senior colleagues, the MDT and agreed external agencies and collaborative partners, the individual will adhere to agreed study pathways and processes to derive accurate and robust data capture of observational and interventional studies.

The post holder will be involved in ensuring that research undertaken within the department safeguards the wellbeing of patients and is conducted within the confines of ICH Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Guidelines for Research, EU directive, UK Governance Framework and other relevant UK legislation pertaining to the conduct and delivery of research.

Be instrumental in implementing team objectives to enhance the performance and development of the Research Delivery Team. They will act as a role model developing the research team, ensuring effective management and delivery of physiological research investigations.

Main duties of the job

This unique post requires an enthusiastic and motivated Highly Specialised Physiologist to lead and deliver the physiology service within the Clinical Research Facility. The post holder will:

Undertake highly specialist clinical physiological investigations as per research protocol on research participants or patients, interpret those results to inform clinical diagnosis, and provide factual reports for specific research trials and both cardiac and non-cardiac physicians and other healthcare professionals.

Make analytical judgements and diagnosis, based on technical investigations, which may impact on patient care, treatment or care pathways.

Prepare, redact and transfer images to study specific core lab, coordinating and liaising with the study Sponsor.

Review and approve new trial requirements for clinical physiological assessment in terms of capacity and capability via one form portal.

Manage financial business ensuring that income is generated and received for physiological services provided within the Clinical Research Facility.

Liaise with the Cardiology Clinical Service Unit to coordinate physiological investigations that are not supported through the Clinical Research Facility to ensure protocol compliance and a positive patient experience.

Undertake study specific training.

Explore opportunities to grow and develop the research physiologist service within the Clinical Research Facility.

To be able to exercise initiative as an autonomous practitioner in both Invasive and Non invasive areas of the Cardiology Department. The individual uses his/her discretion to re-adjust plans as the clinical situation/need of the patient changes.

Lead specialist in own clinical field demonstrating highly specialist in-depth knowledge and theory.

Communicates with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure the best possible care for the patient. Including giving detailed advice to other specialist professions which will influence patient care/outcomes. Communication skills including:

Reassurance, e.g. to patients who are anxious about their clinical findings.

Immediate Life Support training essential due to nature of investigations being undertaken e.g. patients at high risk of cardiac arrest.

Non clinical skills to include computer literacy.

To communicate sensitive information about specialist cardiac investigations to patients and relatives/carers including children and those with learning and/or physical disabilities.

Performs, analyses and interprets a wide range of highly specialist and complex cardiac ultrasound investigations e.g. Tissue Doppler Imaging with quantitative analysis, myocardial perfusion studies. Generates factual reports that are documented in patient clinical notes and/or on relevant databases and directly used to influence patient management. These sources are then in turn used to aid audit and compilation of statistical information.

Has highly developed level of sensory skills and good hand to eye co-ordination in order to immediately analyse and respond to complex life threatening physiological signs. Following interpretation of the results judgemental skills are used in order to make instantaneous decisions about further patient care.

Has a high level of manual dexterity with enhanced precision and timing skills in order to ensure the accurate application of a range of diagnostic tools (e.g. measurement of cardiac ultrasound variables to optimise pacemaker programming settings).

High level of manual dexterity with hand / eye co ordination and sensory skills to position patient and manipulate ultrasound probes to obtain optimum ultrasound images often from limited acoustic windows and within very limited time scales (seconds)

Responsible for day to day security of expensive equipment, e.g. portable ultrasound machines, trans-oesophageal probes.
