An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, caring, enthusiastic and diligent individual to join the fantastic team in the Cardio-Respiratory Clinical Service Unit as a Band 7 Senior Clinical Educator.

The Cardio-respiratory Clinical Service Unit (CSU) comprises of Adult Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery based at Leeds General Infirmary, and Adult Respiratory services based at St Jamess Hospital with a wide range of sub speciality services on sites within LTHT. Nationally and internationally recognised we provide a number of secondary care and tertiary services across the Yorkshire region and beyond.

About you:

You will be a registered nurse with at least two years experience in Cardio-Respiratory.

You will be able to demonstrate effective leadership skills, excellent communication skills and be able to manage a team as well as developing change in the clinical environment.

You will have a passion for education to develop clinical practice mentors/ key trainers through bedside clinical support and continuous professional development activities.

The successful candidate will be provided with the opportunity for ongoing professional development and the opportunities to continue to develop their educational skills.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a proactive role model who will work across the Clinical Service Unit (CSU) to support the delivery of excellent patient care and professional standards. They will play a lead role in ensuring the development of clinical staff both registered and unregistered and be responsible for a team of clinical educators and ensuring the quality and development of training and education across the CSU. The Senior Clinical Educator role will also include:

Supporting the assessment of the quality of clinical and other practice learning environments and implement interventions for improvement.

Supporting mentors and assessors and ensure clinical professional development for preceptorship and other role developments.

Enhancing the quality of care delivery from both the registered and unregistered workforce through engaging clinical teams to learn from incidents, audits, PALs and complaints.

Enabling and supporting the development of interdisciplinary and cross city working to ensure the sharing of good practice and delivery of high quality, effective and efficient care.

Being clinically competent and maintain competence in all aspects of nursing care and disseminate specialist knowledge & skills through experience, education, and training.

Job responsibilities

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Leadership

Support in providing leadership to the clinical team.

Provide line management to junior Clinical Educators within the CSU

Support and inspire staff to provide efficient, effective, safe, quality care to patients

Deliver a positive patient experience

Support in the delivery of an effective, safe, quality service within budgetary envelope

Anticipate problems and take preventative or mitigating actions, or have contingency plans available

Able to make comparison of a range of factors to enable analysis of a number of options

Collates and records quantitative and qualitative data to provide evidence of productivity, outcomes and quality, through audit and research

Leads the development, management and promotion of the service ensuring the delivery of high quality, cost-effective care.

Support and participate in local and trust-wide recruitment events

Provide support to the clinical teams to develop new ways of working

Provide effective leadership in the development of staff at all levels

Motivate staff in the delivery of quality patient care

Contribute to the recruitment and selection process

Contribute to Nursing, Midwifery & AHP objectives and service improvement.

Understanding of performance management strategies.

Provide complex, sensitive information where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training or empathic skills are required, e.g. through. supporting remedial actions to improve an individuals performance

Promote the building of effective teams and collaboration between teams.

Work with Matron to lead the development of ward/department nursing practice, reflecting the Clinical Service Unit and Trust business plans

Deputise in the Matrons absence.

Motivate staff in the delivery of quality patient care.

Supervise clinical delivery of care competencies.

Delegate and empower staff whilst maintaining overall, continuing responsibility and accountability.

Investigate and respond to accidents, complaints, untoward incidents and other significant events.

Clinical

Work in Partnership with Matron, Team Leaders, Senior Sisters/Charge Nurses in the development of department/ward practice, reflecting LTHT strategic education and workforce delivery plans.

Contribute to the training needs analysis for individuals and clinical need.

Responsible for the direct delivery of clinical education (this will include the teaching and demonstration of a range of clinical skills and medical devices).

Provide high quality care as an expert practitioner and act as a role model and resource for advice, support and guidance.

Deliver complex information to patients and staff

Act in accordance with the relevant professional code ie. NMC or HCPC

Fulfil the requirements as directed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council to maintain and revalidate registration.

Ensure and promote the maintenance of a safe, clean and secure working environment.

Assist with maintenance of accurate training records using LTHT documentation and electronic staff records (ESR).

Undertake duties on wards or departments as and when required by service demands or patient need.

Act in such a way that safeguards the health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults at all times. Is familiar with and adheres to, the LTHT safeguarding policies.

Raise concerns with regards to risk, danger, malpractice or wrong doing by following the LTHT Whistleblowing policy and supporting processes.

Supervise clinical staff to promote the delivery of excellent clinical standards.

Provide a visible clinical lead and role model to the team by delivering high quality compassionate care as an expert practitioner.

Instigates and manages change within a complex environment.

Ensure that documentation standards are maintained in accordance with NMC, HCPC and LTHT guidelines, whether written or computerised.

Promote and maintain positive working relationships between all staff, internal and external to the Trust, involved in the care of patients

Help to set, monitor and seek to continuously improve standards and the quality of patient care, including those standards defined in local and national guidance.

Education and Training

Lead and promote an effective learning environment within the workplace.

Participate in the delivery and development of organisational and local induction and preceptorship programmes, ensuring these reflect the needs of LTHT

Collaborate with the Lead Nurse for Education and with Organisational Learning in the provision of training and education locally and across the organisation

Be responsible to provide education to support the safe use of equipment within the CSU

Lead, support and guide junior clinical educators, mentors and assessors in the workplace ensuring continuity in assessment and addressing inconsistencies;

Contribute to the maintenance of detailed and accurate records regarding staff education, including monthly and quarterly reports;

Contribute to the development and evaluation of educational programmes to ensure clinical areas are able to achieve and maintain an accredited educational learning environment for all students, registered and unregistered staff;

Collaborate with other members of the team in clinical areas and departments to ensure that the provision of education and training is high quality and meets the needs of the Trust and Clinical Service Unit.

Mentorship and supervision of junior staff;

Liaise with outside agencies in the development of suitable education and training opportunities for staff;

Support staff to deliver evidence based practice and research activities to further enhance patient care;

Participate in own and others appraisals

Undertake mandatory and priority training within the required time scales

Enables people to access, identify, appraise and interpret information, to determine their own future.
