Job description
Job responsibilities
The
successful postholder will contribute to diagnostic and interventional
neuroradiology services in close liaison with colleagues in neurology and
neurosurgery. Expansion of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trusts (LTHT) Stroke
Mechanical Thrombectomy [SMT] service is critical in meeting the NHS Long-Term
Plan ambitions regarding stroke outcomes. LTHT has committed to the delivery of
24/7/365 SMT service by the end of 2026. Central to delivery of this ambition
is recruitment of specialised consultant staff skilled in the technical
management and delivery of SMT, and of the nursing and AHP workforce to support
them. There are also plans in progress to double the biplane image intensifier
fleet within the department to support the SMT and general Interventional
Neuroradiology workload. The second biplane suite is expected to be functional
by the end of 2027.
Currently
we are recruiting a consultant interventional neuroradiologists [INR] with the
eventual aim to have a complement of 5 consultant INRs and deliver a 24/7/365
service. A neurosurgeon trained in GMC-credentials for thrombectomy also
contributes to the delivery of SMT service in the department. There is plan in
place to recruit another consultant INR in the third quarter of 2026. This
expansion in INR consultant workforce is in parallel to recruitment of
IR-radiographers, IR-nurses, consultant anaesthetists, and expansion in stroke
physicians and nurses to facilitate delivery of 24/7/365 SMT service by the end
of 2026.

OBJECTIVES
OF THE POST
Overview of Radiology in LTHT
The LTHT radiology department is one of the largest in
Europe and has an established reputation for clinical innovation and expertise
along with a significant teaching and research profile. The department contains one of three national
radiology training academies with associated educational facilities and
resources for the Leeds Bradford Radiology training scheme. In terms of research the department has
helped establish a NIHR funded research 3T MRI as part of the Leeds Biomedical
Research Unit contained on trust premises.
Within this unit imaging plays a large part in most musculoskeletal
projects along with performance of separate radiology specific research.
Recently the
department has also been successful in obtaining funding for developing and establishing an academic
programme focusing on oncology radiology
led by a Professor of Radiology.
The University of Leeds is a major partner in both of
these research streams and is looking to expand the latter with specific
academic radiology appointments. In
terms of university honorary
appointments radiology consultants have formed a large proportion of the
recently created Honorary Clinical Associate Professor positions.
Research and Education are priorities for the Trust and
any new radiology consultant appointed will have the opportunity to explore
furthering research and educational possibilities when in post if they wish.
