Required
to fill this new post within the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department at
the Leeds General Infirmary / Leeds Dental Institute.
All inpatient services are concentrated on the
Leeds General Infirmary site with outpatient and local anaesthetic services
being carried out at the Leeds Dental Institute and Wharfedale Hospital. The
Department currently provides a service for secondary referrals for the local
population received from medical and dental practitioners. It also provides a
service for tertiary referrals for complex craniofacial trauma, craniofacial
deformity and oncology.

Main duties of the job
The
successful applicant should possess FRCS (OMFS) (or equivalent) and should be
included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of
interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment
regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist
Register.
Applicants should have
established skills in the field of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and its
related specialties including Management of Head & Neck Oncology including
free flap reconstruction. A strong
commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest
is desirable.
Consideration will be given to
applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

How would you design and sustain a resilient OMFS oncology service that
delivers timely, high-quality cancer care within the constraints of current NHS

The Trust is a designated Level 1 Trauma Centre. It is one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK. Maxillofacial referrals to Leeds Teaching Hospitals have steadily increased across the full range of the specialties activity including orthognathic and craniofacial services. Maintenance and expansion of the service is necessary to cope with this demand.
2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
2.1 The post is an appointment for an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Consultant with the objectives:
- To carry out maxillofacial clinical services with an emphasis on the management of Head and Neck cancer
- To contribute to the role of Leeds as a training centre for Oral and Maxillofacial surgery.
- To improve the efficiency and productivity of the Oral and Maxillofacial surgical services
- To help further develop Leeds as a centre of excellence for Oral and Maxillofacial surgery
- To provide support and clinical expertise to the teams based in referring centres
- To contribute and improve the quality of Undergraduate and Postgraduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery
- To improve the quality of care and increase the scope for innovation
- To facilitate and develop research interests in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery
- To participate in a consultant rota to provide acute in-hour and out-of-hours Oral and Maxillofacial surgery with a particular focus on Head and Neck Cancer
