Consultant in Paediatric Neurology

Job summary

Required to fill this 10 PA, replacement post within the Paediatric Neurology Department at the Leeds General Infirmary with specialist interest in paediatric neuromuscular disease. A key role of the appointee will be to work within the specialist neuromuscular service. The Leeds Paediatric neuromuscular service is recognised as a MDUK Centre of Clinical and Research Excellence and as a DMD Hub site, provides a wide portfolio of research activity.

The neuromuscular team comprises of physiotherapists, occupational therapy, Neuromuscular specialist nursing, including a dedicated transition nurse and family care advisors, alongside the existing consultants. There are regular neurophysiology clinics, supported by a consultant neurophysiologist.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant should possess MRCPH (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.

Applicants should have established skills in Paediatric Neurology and its related specialties. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.

Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

Job responsibilities

This is a 10PA substantive appointment for a Consultant Paediatric Neurologist with specialist interest in paediatric neuromuscular disease. A key role of the appointee will be to work within the specialist neuromuscular service. The Leeds Paediatric neuromuscular service is recognised as a MDUK Centre of Clinical and Research Excellence and as a DMD Hub site, provides a wide portfolio of research activity.

The neuromuscular team comprises of physiotherapists, occupational therapy, neuromuscular specialist nursing, including a dedicated transition nurse and family care advisors, alongside the existing consultants. There are regular neurophysiology clinics, supported by a consultant neurophysiologist.

The post will be based at Leeds Childrens Hospital, Leeds General Infirmary. The Consultant will join 5 existing paediatric neurology consultants, to deliver Paediatric neurology services to the region. They will work alongside a team of 4 paediatric neurosurgeons, in addition to specialist neurology nurses and AHPs and the skilled team on the childrens neuroscience ward.

The department of paediatric neurosciences provides a comprehensive service to the children of West, East and North Yorkshire together with NE Lincolnshire, serving a population of 1 million children from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Inpatient services are based at the Leeds Childrens Hospital within a dedicated paediatric neurosciences unit, where children are jointly cared for by paediatric neurologists and neurosurgeons. There are strong links with all other paediatric subspecialties co located in the Childrens Hospital including the regional neonatal and paediatric intensive care units.

The paediatric neuroscience team benefit from the support of excellent neuroradiology, neurophysiology, neuropathology and genetics services and, given their co-location at the Leeds General Infirmary, with our counterparts in adult neurology.

The paediatric neurology team provide outpatient clinics in Leeds and in outreach clinics across the region as part of the Yorkshire Paediatric Neuroscience Network. The team have recently developed an innovative model, to enable the provision of rapid clinical advice and support to regional medical colleagues, via virtual clinician-to-clinician Hub discussions which are coordinated and minuted contemporaneously by our neurology coordinator. Such Hub discussions are provided on an urgent and elective basis by all members of the consultant team.

Subspecialty clinics are provided in epilepsy including epilepsy surgery, VNS, ketogenic diet and TS clinics, in neuro-oncology, neurovascular disease,inflammatory disorders, headaches and inherited white matter disorders, the latter being a nationally commissioned service. There are also clinics for children with complex motor disorders who can be offered a range intervention including botulinum injections, intrathecal baclofen and Selective dorsal rhizotomy.
