Job description
Job responsibilities
The Leeds Institute of
Emergency General Surgery (LIEGS) is recruiting Emergency General Surgeons
dedicated to providing rapid high quality care for general surgical
emergencies. The post will appeal to
those who are committed to a career in emergency surgery, or indeed those
experienced surgeons later in their career who would like a new challenge
without night time work.
In relation to this post,
the post will be available immediately and based at St Jamess University
Hospital. The post holder will be responsible for delivering emergency acute
surgery to adults, admitted acutely to the trust, those patients via primary
care seen in the Ambulatory Surgical Centre, the Surgical Assessment Unit,
Theatres and associated follow up clinics. Job plans can be flexible around the
individuals needs but include supervision and training of general surgical
trainees and medical students within the AMS CSU. Once fully recruited, the
roles will be daytime and weekend working, without night-time on calls.
As well as having one of the highest
numbers of laparotomies per annum (NELA), attendance in our SAU had risen by
over 30% prior to the establishment of the EGS service. Novel pathways to modernise these services
have been vital. The unit therefore manages patient flow dynamically and has
developed new ambulatory care pathways including local anaesthetic abscess
management and instituted ambulatory diagnostic and management strategies to
effectively manage and support patient care. The take is split between two
emergency general surgery consultants during daytime hours who are supported
overnight by the existing body of 20 full time equivalent tertiary
sub-speciality general surgeons (Colorectal, Pancreas and Upper GI). The
Emergency Surgery team are supported by a full team of junior doctors and
advanced care practitioners and as such have been one of the successful pilot
sites for the utilisation of the Extended Surgical Team. We are committed to
delivering high quality training and support to our junior team members and
have had huge success in this area with a 100% conversion rate of trust grade
posts into surgical training numbers.
Yorkshire features large areas of
unspoilt natural landscapes such as The Yorkshire Dales and Moors as well as
the East Coast. Its unique mixture of multicultural city living, and
traditional English countryside makes Yorkshire one of the best places to live
in the UK. Yorkshire will give you easy access to both. Live in an isolated
rural community but feel the need for some city centre excitement? Live in the
city but need to fill your lungs with some seriously fresh air? Or feast your
eyes on some stunning countryside? Yorkshire has it all, from the East
Yorkshire Coastline and Yorkshire Dales to vibrant cities like Leeds, Harrogate
and York. There is a wealth of both excellent state and private schools as
well.
