Job summary

This exciting role for Lead Cardiac Physiologist / Practice educator will provide professional and clinical leadership across the Yorkshire and Humber Network, acting as a source of expertise, training and support for those cardiac physiologists involved in the provision of diagnostic investigations to children and adults with congenital heart disease.

The post-holder will work with the Network Management Team and the Congenital Echo Team based at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The Lead Physiologist will work with cardiac physiologists / clinical scientists across the Network to support the development and improvement of diagnostic cardiac investigations and ensure the national service standards and specifications for CHD are met. The postholder will ensure relevant education and training is delivered across all the provider units.

This post requires extensive experience in all aspects of cardiac ultrasound and an in-depth knowledge of congenital heart disease. First-rate practical imaging and communication and mentoring skills are essential. Applicants should have a post graduate qualification in cardiac ultrasound, or equivalent. Applicants should hold British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) Transthoracic accreditation or equivalent. In addition, applicants would be expected to hold congenital echo accreditation.

Main duties of the job

The postholder, based within the Congenital Echo Team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, will provide professional and clinical leadership across the Network, acting as a source of expertise, training and support for cardiac physiologists involved in the provision and delivery of a high standard of diagnostic investigations to children and adults with congenital heart disease at LTHT and throughout the network. in addition, the postholder will work as a member of the congenital echo team, having clinical, educational and managerial roles within the specialist centre.

The post-holder will work with the Consultant Clinical Scientist, Network Manager, and Lead Clinician as part of a multi -disciplinary strategic team to ensure high quality services for children and adults with congenital heart disease across the Yorkshire and Humber, and equitable access to services across the Network.

The postholder will work with cardiac physiologists / clinical scientists across the Network to support the development and improvement of diagnostic cardiac investigations and ensure the national service standards and specifications for CHD are met.

The postholder will ensure relevant education and training is delivered across all the provider units.

The postholder will ensure that there are effective mechanisms in place for user involvement and participation in service planning and service improvement in the work of the Network.

Congenital heart disease services in Leeds serve a population of approximately 5.25 million covering the whole of Yorkshire, Humberside and Northern Trent. Around 500 children are born with heart defects in this region every year. This highly complex and specialist service deals with a wide spectrum of patients including the fetus, neonate, child, adolescent and adult.

o Supporting both adult and paediatric CHD clinics in OP

o Inpatient scans for both adult and paediatric patients with CHD

o Support the Hull ACHD clinic this was a departmental clinical commitment previously and has been maintained within this role

o Bubble echo studies

Leadership : 0.2 WTE

o Supporting departmental lead/deputy with staffing and service delivery, including equipment evaluation and bids/ budget monitoring

o Enabling/supporting research/audit within the department (income generation)

o Work collaboratively with other CHD networks

o Leading service improvement work

o Work with the multi disciplinary strategic team

o Departmental appraisals

Education: 0.2 WTE

o Providing training and support for echocardiographers involved in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) in the level 3 centres.

o Coordinating, delivering and support training of the cardiac physiologists in the region proposed that we have 2 trainees per year in congenital echo training
