We are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity at Leeds Childrens Hospital. We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic Childrens Nurses (RSCN/ RN Child) to be part of the Children and Young Peoples Diabetes Nurse Specialist Team. This is a 2 year fixed term contract.

The Children and Young Peoples Diabetes Service in Leeds is one of the largest in the country, caring for over 550 children and young people with diabetes of different types up to their 20th birthday. It is a local, regional and supra regional centre with many families travelling a long distance to see and take advice from our very well established and highly skilled multidisciplinary team. The Childrens Diabetes Service at Leeds is at the forefront of many recent diabetes improvement initiatives with a well-respected reputation.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to be part of diabetes team to:

Support and educate children, young people and their families to manage diabetes. This would be provided from diagnosis, including inpatient and ongoing care with outpatients and community visits.

To manage their own caseload along with supporting other team members to manage theirs.

Continued improvement and development of services and educational resources.

Coordination of services into young adult diabetes care and in ensuring the patients journey is tailored to individual needs.

Providing specialist supervision, teaching and consultation to practitioners both within and outside the organisation

Ongoing clinical audit, research and standard setting.

About us

The diabetes team look after approximately 60 newly diagnosed children and CYP each year. The children and YP and their families require urgent treatment, training and education and ongoing support from a highly skilled diabetes specialist nurse. CYP require 6 appointments in the 1st year and a minimum of 4 clinic appointments each year thereafter to review and support and help with the management of diabetes. In between clinics diabetes specialist nurses provide ongoing support to families, schools, colleges and other health care professionals as required to ensure the CYP and their family have the best support possible for their diabetes management.
