Family Support Worker (XR03)

Job summary

The Millie Wright Childrens Charity has generously funded this rare and exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Family Support Worker. The successful candidate will work with the senior family support worker to provide a dedicated resource for children, young people, siblings and parents, offering practical and emotional support throughout their hospital journey.

The successful candidate will join experienced and dynamic clinical and charitable teams, who are committed to improving the lived experience of children and young people with life threatening non-malignant haematological (NMH) and liver and renal (LR) diseases, and their families. The post will be based at Leeds Childrens Hospital and most of the post holders time will be spent supporting families on ward L50 (LR) and the childrens haematology day unit. The post holder will also support families who are admitted to intensive care or the haematology inpatient wards, where the need is identified. The post holder will be expected to work some weekend shifts.

Experience in haematology or liver and renal medicine is not essential as full training and support will be provided.

Main duties of the job

Provide practical and emotional support for children, young people and families, working at all times to incorporate the values of the Millie Wright Childrens Charity: Equality - supporting all families fairly; Individuality - recognising children, young people and their families as individuals and being flexible and respectful in the approach to care; Transparency - being honest, cost efficient and accountable; Courage - advocating change, raising awareness and facing challenges.

Act as a dedicated resource for children, young people, and families, alongside the senior family support worker.

Work closely with the relevant clinical and charitable teams, building positive working relationships.

Support families at the bedside/during outpatient appointments or treatments. This may include, but is not limited to, sitting with and/or entertaining children/young people to allow parents a break, taking parents for a coffee, escorting families to other areas where necessary, spending time getting to know families.

Build trusting relationships with families through ward visits.

Provide emotional support, particularly during times of stress.

Identify the needs of individual families and develop programmes of care or initiatives to meet these needs, under the supervision of the senior family support worker.Be available via mobile phone, during working hours, for clinical staff and families in need to contact directly.

About us

The Non-Malignant Haematology team at Leeds Childrens Hospital currently comprises; one Band 7 CNS, two Band 6 CNSs, a senior family support worker, a dedicated pharmacist, four Consultant Haematologists and a varying number of trainee Haematologists.

Most of the workload is conducted onsite at the Leeds Childrens Hospital, in the Haematology and Oncology Day Unit, wards L31 and L33 and in the CNS offices. There may be some necessity for travel to external hospitals, agencies, and family homes.

The MDT work collaboratively and respectfully to provide the best possible.
