Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and highly motivated registrant (Nurse/AHP) to join a successful award-winning Infection Prevention and Control Team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust.

Providing risk assessments to staff to support decision making for patient care

Analysing surveillance data to measure success of infection prevention and control policy to identify areas for improvement

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the infection prevention and control of communicable infections within the Leeds Hospitals Trust. The post holder will provide specialist expertise and advice to clinical and non-clinical services and contribute to developing the IPC service Commitment to work flexibly over a 7 day week

Has an advisory role and clinical input into the care relevant to the patient by supporting the clinical areas

Assesses, plans and communicates actions required by clinical staff for safe infection control patient care

Provides infection control advice to all disciplines and grades of staff, patients and their carers Maintaining positive professional relationships

Advises on isolation techniques and assists with the participation in their introduction and practice

Ability to interpret and explain laboratory reports relevant to infection control to ward staff. Relates relevant clinical information to the laboratory staff

Assists in the investigation of outbreaks of infection with particular reference to their source and mode of spread

Assists in the collection of relevant clinical data for use by the Infection Control Team, including surveillance data

Job responsibilities

Fulfil the requirements as directed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council/ Health and Care professionals council (HCPC) to maintain and revalidate registration.

Commitment to work flexibly over a 7 day week

Has an advisory role and clinical input into the care relevant to the patient by supporting the clinical areas

Assesses, plans and communicates actions required by clinical staff for safe infection control patient care

Provides infection control advice to all disciplines and grades of staff, patients and their carers Maintaining positive professional relationships

Advises on isolation techniques and assists with the participation in their introduction and practice

Ability to interpret and explain laboratory reports relevant to infection control to ward staff. Relates relevant clinical information to the laboratory staff

Assists in the investigation of outbreaks of infection with particular reference to their source and mode of spread

Assists in the collection of relevant clinical data for use by the Infection Control Team, including surveillance data

Demonstrate an awareness of the complex needs of different client groups when imparting or receiving sensitive, complex or contentious information within a hostile or highly emotive atmosphere

Able to cope with staff, patients and carers in distressing or emotional circumstances

Due to the nature of the job, needs to be flexible, coping with frequent unpredictable changes within daily workload, for example attending Root Cause Analysis and investigating Health care Associated Investigations

Undertakes duties on wards and or departments as and when required by service demands or patient needs

Acts in such a way that safeguards the health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults at all times. Is familiar with and adheres to the LTHT safeguarding policies

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Walking between wards and departments

Travel between hospital sites on occasions for meetings and outbreak review this may include shuttle to the various sites of the Trust.

Frequent standing, sitting at computer for substantial proportion of work.

Using ICNet Manager to manage workload and access results

The team may be asked to support clinical areas if they were breaching the acceptable staffing levels.

The IPC team would be expected to undertake audits of hand hygiene, environmental audits

MENTAL EFFORT:

Undertaking patient clinical reviews

Unpredictable workload - need to re-prioritise workload in response to external demand (i.e. Norovirus outbreaks)

Interruptions to deal with service issues, pager/telephone

Some periods of concentration required to write up reports/audits respond to email enquiries

EMOTIONAL EFFORT:

Exposure to difficult situations including death and dying, distressed patients and relatives/carers. When discussing newly diagnosed patients with MRSA/Clostridium difficile, when staff require additional support during difficult circumstances.

Supporting staff, patients, relatives and members of the public on issues related to infection prevention and control, which can be emotive

IPC would be involved in staff and patient engagement for IPC surveys

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Occasional exposure to highly unpleasant working conditions during clinical visits to wards/departments to unpleasant smells, particularly when managing Norovirus outbreaks

Occasionally required to work within clinical areas supporting clinical teams

Cross-site working/travel may be required in order to cover for staff sickness/annual leave and attendance at meetings

Violence & Aggression - may experience violence and aggression from patients and or relatives or carers.
