Band 5 Registered Nurses (RN) - are you looking for an exciting opportunity to develop your career? There is great scope for the Registered Nurse role within our dermatology nursing team, as the specialty offers so many opportunities for career development. If you have a passion for dermatology, are enthusiastic and motivated, with a desire to provide excellent patient care, please consider joining our nursing team in Dermatology Outpatients and C04 Dermatology Surgical Day Case unit..

In the Dermatology Outpatient Department we have general and specialist clinics, day treatment, wound clinics, skin allergy testing and much more. As an RN there is scope to work across all areas of our services, and is a fantastic opportunity for someone keen to develop a career within the specialty.

On C4 we undertake dermatological surgery, which ranges from simple biopsy for diagnostic purposes, to complex excision, flaps and grafts and MOHS day case surgery for skin cancer. Surgery is undertaken by Consultants, Registrars and Surgical Nurse Practitioners.

Main duties of the job

In dermatology outpatients you would be working within the clinics, assisting clinicians with patient care. This may mean undertaking a skin treatment whilst the patient is here, performing a leg ulcer dressing, assisting with an urgent skin biopsy, undertaking a scalp treatment, working in the patch test area making up skin patch tests which then confirm or rule out allergies. It may be sitting with a patient and educating them about how they need to apply their skin treatments. You will be working in the phototherapy department, undertaking initial skin assessments and then treating patients with ultra violet light therapies. The role of the RN in dermatology is very hands on - unlike some outpatient areas. No two days are alike, but it is so rewarding to see patients who are really suffering with terrible skin disease and then making progress.skin diseases are mostly long term conditions, and you get to know your patients well.

On C04 we have 7 procedure rooms - 2 of which are dedicated to MOHS surgery. 5 are for dermatology surgical procedures ranging from biopsies to complex excision and flaps and grafts. The majority of our surgery is to diagnose and treat skin cancer.

MOHS patients attend for specialist skin cancer surgery performed by our dedicated MOHS consultants. There are between 3-5 cases per day, under local anaesthesia. You would be assisting with procedures on C04 which may include scrubbing for MOHS.

About us

We have a fantastic team of staff (ranging from band 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) who work either across both services in Dermatology Outpatients and on C04, or predominantly in one specific area.

The team are fully committed to ensuring that the two departments are well led, and that the care patients receive is constantly of a high standard. Working across both areas enables a degree of flexibility in terms of staffing levels, but also an opportunity for nursing staff to enjoy working in a range of clinical areas, for example contact allergy, paediatric clinics, phototherapy, genital / vulval clinics, skin cancer, emergency clinics, general clinics, wound / leg ulcer clinics, lasers.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals is committed to our process of redeploying 'at risk' members of our existing workforce to new roles. As such, all our job adverts are subject to this policy and we reserve the right to close, delay or remove adverts while this process is completed. If you do experience a delay in the shortlisting stage of the recruitment cycle, please bear with us while this process is completed, and contact the named contact if you have any questions.
