Job responsibilities
The
jobholder will demonstrate evidence based care facilitated by on-going
education, training and assessment by the senior Nursing & Consultant team.
The jobholder will be expected to perform duties such as assessment, clinical
examination, planning of care, clinical treatment, evaluation and health promotion of
dermatological problems within agreed protocols associated with skin cancer
& dermatological surgery. The job
holder will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team and implement
nurse led care. They will participate in mentorship and teaching programmes for
multi-disciplinary groups within the department.
The
jobholder will provide senior nursing support, advice and professional
leadership to a specified group of clinical areas within dermatology.
PRINCIPAL
DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Clinical
Work within the NMC Code of Conduct.
To fulfil the requirements as directed
by the Nursing and Midwifery Council to maintain and revalidate registration
Deliver a high standard of patient
focused care in accordance with Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust guidelines and
policies.
Provides, receives and interprets
complex information to enable delivery
of appropriate interventions of care
Independently assess, diagnose,
prioritise, treat and safely discharge patients in accordance with agreed
protocols.
Use of locally agreed PDGs for the
supply and/or administration of a licensed medicine in an identified clinical
situation.
Non-medical prescribers will prescribe
treatments and medications within their scope of practice
Accurately request x-rays and make
clinical treatment decisions based on their independent interpretation of
x-ray.
Act as a referral agent and
co-ordinator of care provision.
Establishes effective multi-agency
collaboration across the primary/secondary interface to meet the needs of the
patients.
To promote heath giving health
promotion advice when and where appropriate.
Act as a role model for the
development of clinical skills and knowledge within the department team.
Maintain a safe working environment.
Support the line manager in setting
and monitoring standards and seek to continuously improve standards and the
quality of patient care, and promote evidence based best practice.
To maintain accurate, detailed written
records in accordance with the NMC and LTHT policies and guidelines.
Ensure the safe use and efficient
management of equipment and supplies.
Undertake audit/research as required.
Actively promote and use the Leeds
Improvement Method to improve the quality and safety of the service
Service development in line with
local/National initiatives.
Child & vulnerable adult
protection.
Undertake duties on other wards or
departments as and when required by service demands or patient need
Act in such a way that safeguards the
health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults at all times. Is
familiar with and adheres to, the LTHT safeguarding policies.
Education
and Training
Contribute to the promotion of a
positive learning environment within the clinical area.
Participate in own and others

Undertake mandatory and priority
training within the required time scales
Participate in preceptorship and
mentorship programmes.
Undertake continuous professional and
clinical development, seeking opportunities to enhance skills.
Participate in clinical supervision.
Managerial
Working with the line manager to
provide leadership to the clinical team, developing new rotas/ways of working.
Support the line manager in staff
rostering, ensuring adequate skill mix.
In conjunction with the line manager
closely monitor bank and agency usage.
Support the line manager in
investigating and responding to accidents, complaints, untoward incidents and
other significant events.
Raise concerns with regards to risk,
danger, malpractice or wrong doing by following the LTHT Whistleblowing policy
and supporting processes

SPECIAL
WORKING CONDITIONS
i) Physical
effort:
Frequent
standing, sitting, walking, kneeling and crouching to attend to patient needs.
Moving
& Handling of patients (10-120kg (with lifting aids)) and equipment (weight
1-20kg) on a daily basis.
Manual
dexterity required to be able to manipulate equipment eg preparation and
administration of injections, venepuncture, cannulation, application of
dressings, insertion and removal of catheters.
ii) Mental effort:
Frequent
and prolonged mental effort is required for example to perform independent
assessment and diagnosis ensuring accuracy, making decisions regarding patients
discharge home, writing detailed clinical notes and planning further management
action and calculating drug doses.
Dealing
with complex and changing care needs of patients within an acute hospital
environment (includes communication with relatives/carers).
iii) Emotional effort:
The
post deals with undiagnosed complaints; at times this can be challenging,
stressful and unpredictable. The attention to detail and the ability to deal
with patients and their relatives will require emotional stability and balance
at all times.
Unpredictable
workload requires the l Nurse Practitioner to be able to rapidly prioritise
their workload at all times.
Exposure
to difficult situations including distressed patients and relatives/carers.
Dealing
with staffing issues/performance issues.
iv) Working conditions:
Dealing
with body fluids.
May
experience violence and aggression from patients and/or relatives/carers.
Exposure
to patients with infections.
