Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Psychologist/ Neuropsychologist to take up a Principal position within the Outpatient Neuropsychology Service; a minimum of 0.9WTE is required. The outpatient service receives referrals from neurology and neurosurgery; we offer specialist neuropsychological assessment and therapeutic work across a wide range of neurological and neurosurgical presentations. The role will include direct clinical work, consultation, research, teaching and other duties as the post requires. Leadership and management is a key part of the role and the post-holder will be leading on projects within the Outpatient team and wider department.

Main duties of the job

This post will be suitable for someone who has considerable experience within clinical neuropsychology and has completed, or is about to complete, the Underpinning Knowledge Component of the QiCN. The post will involve supervision of more junior staff and therefore experience of working with a wide-range of patients with both neurological and neurosurgical presentations is required. In addition, we are looking for someone with experience of leadership and development in busy services, managing competing demands. Some experience of line managing staff would be an advantage.

About us

You will be a part of the Outpatient Neuropsychology Section of the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology. We are a friendly and supportive team and are keen to support people wishing to work towards registration on the Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists. We offer frequent supervision and support, a monthly case reflective practice group and opportunities to join regularly held special interest groups such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT). There are monthly neuro CPD sessions and inset days.

10. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

1. To provide specialist neuropsychological and psychological assessments of patients referred to the service, based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of highly complex data from a variety of sources including neuropsychological and psychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with patients, family members and others involved in the patients care.

2. To formulate, develop and implement plans for the formal neuropsychological and psychological treatment and/or management of a patients neuropsychological and psychological problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the patients problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings.

3. To be responsible for implementing a range of neuropsychological and psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, within and across teams employed individually and in synthesis, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.

4. To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.

5. To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients whose problems are managed by neuropsychologically and psychologically based standard care plans.

6. To provide highly specialised neuropsychological and psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to patients formulation, diagnosis and treatment plans.

7. To ensure that all relevant professionals have access to a neuropsychologically / psychologically based framework for understanding and care of patients in the service, through the provision of advice and consultation and the dissemination of neuropsychological/ psychological research and theory.
