Job summary

We are advertising for two Assistant Psychologists; one post to work in the neuropsychology section and the other post to work into the Trauma, Orthopaedics, Plastics and Prosthetics Team.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two Assistant Psychologists to join the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in a range of clinical and research activities, which will include direct therapeutic work with patients who are living with long term health conditions, those who have experienced traumatic injury or those who have neuropsychological difficulties.

Main duties of the job

We welcome applications from individuals who have an interest in working in a clinical health setting. The successful candidate will be required to work alongside Clinical Psychologists from different health specialities. Duties may involve clinical assessment, including administering and scoring psychological tests, and delivering short-term therapeutic interventions with patients. Other duties include data collection and analysis as related to research projects and supporting in the development of research proposals and writing papers for publication.

The Department of Clinical and Health Psychology is a large team made up of Clinical and Counselling Psychologists, Counsellors and Therapists. In joining the Department you would have the opportunity to work alongside different professionals and gain some experience of different speciality areas, as well as receiving regular supervision from a qualified member of staff. In addition, there will be opportunities to participate in department-wide Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and to contribute to other activities that support and enhance patient experience.

To undertake clinical assessment and deliver short term interventions with patients under one of the specialist areas (Surgical and Rehabilitation services, Medicine, Neuropsychology). There will be a range of clinical, research and service development responsibilities. Clinical duties may include providing low intensity, short-term therapeutic intervention to patients with long term health conditions, traumatic injury and or neuropsychological difficulties. Research and service evaluation duties include administering and scoring psychological tests; assessment of participants enrolled in research studies; maintenance of databases; data collection and analysis; and assistance with writing papers and research proposals. This will include the use of a database (Excel); advanced systematic literature searches and retrieval; data collection, data entry and liaison with a variety of professions. The appointee will be supervised by a Clinical Psychologist.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working directly with service users in a health care or other relevant setting.

Desirable

  • Experience of working in health psychology.

Practical skills or Additional Requirements

Essential

  • Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for the post (with reasonable adjustments if necessary), including clearance on blood borne viruses in compliance with Trust Policy

Skills & behaviours

Essential

  • Ability to work as part of a health care team.
  • High-level of developed communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate with medical and nursing staff.
  • Experience using computers for creation and management of databases or data-analysis, especially Excel and SPSS for Windows

Desirable

  • Skills in the administration and scoring of complex neuropsychological and psychological tests, frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.

  • An upper second class honours degree or higher in Psychology.
  • Entitlement to Graduate Membership of the British Psychological Society.
