JOB
SUMMARY
This
post will be MSK outpatient based and will assist in exercise prescription
and planning of rehabilitation programmes for patients who have been referred
to the physiotherapy department by the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Consultants
and also self-referring staff members at LTHT.
The
post will be subject to a probationary period of 6 months to meet departmental
criteria and personal development in relation to the area. This timeframe will allow for mandatory
training and specialist in -service training to be carried out, ensuring the
candidate is appropriately prepped for their clinical caseload. The post holder
will work closely with the physiotherapy staff to provide exercise and
analysis to patients in a pre-operative, non-operative and post-operative
capacity. The role will also require direct patient contact with management
of an individualised diary. Other duties will include attending and
participating in teaching and in house training, equipment inventory and
monitoring. There will be work with
patients of varying levels from sub elite to patients aiming to optimise
their normal functional levels. The Strength and Conditioning Exercise
practitioner would be required to deliver elements of health and social care
and undertake work that previously may have only been within the remit of
other registered professionals and for this reason this role may transcend
professional boundaries.
The
post holder will be required to follow a programme of development to enable
them to complete the required service competencies.
The
post will be based predominantly at one of two sites and a flexible cross
site working structure may be required.
3. JOB PURPOSE
3.1 To provide highly skilled support work
with people requiring rehabilitation.
3.2 To deliver onsite training programmes
tailored to the patients needs and if applicable their post-op instructions
and restrictions.
3.3 The successful candidate will play a
key role in the monitoring, implementation and evaluation of physiotherapy
rehabilitation programmes and packages of care.
3.4 May involve ordering of equipment and
or orthotics to assist the patient.
3.5 Will involve leading and assisting
with group exercise and advice sessions.
3.6 Assist in the formulation and updating
of evidence based protocols and guidelines.
3.7 The successful candidate will be
required to ensure effective communication is maintained at all times as
there may be sensitive and complex communication needs for certain patients.
3.8 Assisting the team in developing and
promoting quality evidence based practice and contributing to the effective
treatment of patients in accordance with the Leeds Way.
4. JOB DIMENSIONS.
4.1 The post holder will be responsible
for managing their own individual caseload which will be varied and on
occasions require prioritisation to best meet the service demands.
4.2 To work to competencies and local
protocols and understand local communication networks. This includes making
judgments around what may or may not be significant changes in a patients
condition, involving observation and engagement skills and whether or not to
report to the MDT. This may involve recognition and appropriate response to
emergency situations. Follow standard operating procedures (competencies).
4.3 To undertake aspects of work as an
autonomous practitioner within this specialist field with patients who have
diverse/complex/multi pathological/ varying abilities and presentations.
4.4 Contribute to discharge of an
individual and advise them as to their future rehab needs. This will include the provision of advice
and information on how to self-manage their condition
4.5 Carry out and provide feedback on specific
plans of care activities i.e. act on own initiative when delivering patient
care, with mechanisms in place for supervision.
4.6 Promote effective communication with, for
and about individuals i.e. patients, other team members and other
services/agencies in a manner appropriate to the setting and the individuals
needs. This may involve adapting methods to overcome barriers to
understanding. Communication may be verbal, written or electronic.
4.7 Complete records for individuals i.e.
Maintain contemporaneous medical records (written & electronic) in line
with Trust policy. This includes the ability to take accurate referral
information.
4.8 Relate to & interact with individuals
using encouragement, sensitivity, support and interventions as necessary.
Maintain effective communication with your team and others you come into
contact with. Able to give appropriate feedback to referrers as to the
relevance of and response to the referral.
4.9 Comply with legal requirements for
patient/client confidentiality.
4.10 Prepare for and participate in quality
audits. Contribute to and carry out quality audits as necessary.
4.11 Contribute to the development of
organisational policy and practice i.e. make recommendations to implement practice
development plans and raise the standards of practice delivery.
4.12 Ensure your own actions, support the
equality, diversity, rights and responsibilities of individuals; Staff should
ensure that their actions support the aim of the Trust in ensuring that all
patients are protected from significant harm, abuse and neglect, within the
framework of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.
6. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED
6.1 Qualifications
6.1.1 Degree or equivalent in Sports and Exercises
Science, Sports Therapy or Sports Rehabilitation.
6.1.2 MSc Strength and Conditioning, UKSCA or
CSCS Accreditation (or working towards)

.2 Experience
6.2.1 Experience working with different
populations in an exercise setting; age 16 and over.
6.2.2 Experience working with patients with
comorbidities eg. Diabetes, Cardiac issues.
6.2.3 Working with a wide range of
professionals in an MDT environment.
6.3 Skills
6.3.1 Ability to communicate effectively both
verbally and in writing within a multi professional team
6.3.2 Ability to prioritise, organise and
allocate workload.
6.3.3 Ability to teach, supervise and assess
patients in their exercise prescription and planning
6.3.4 Time management skills
6.4 Knowledge
6.4.1 Sound knowledge of exercises prescription
acquired through experience and/or academic study to graduate level or
equivalent.
6.4.2 An understanding of current professional
issues and those influencing the NHS.
6.4.3 Standards of professional practice in
line with the UKSCA and or CSCS or equivalent.

9. Requirements
9.1 Participate in regular supervision.
9.2 Attend all mandatory training.
9.3 Once the probation period is passed,
participate annually developing and agreeing your own development plan with
your Line Manager using the Trust Appraisal.
9.4 Comply with all Trust policies,

9.5 Seek advice and support from Line
Manager whenever necessary.
9.6 Maintain professional conduct
including appearance at all times.
9.7 Manage and organise your own time and
activities i.e. organise and plan your own day to day work , including
allocated caseload, whilst coping with occasional last minute changes.
