An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Patient Flow Team for a Full time Bed Manager (Band 6 RN) who has an interest in the flow of patients within a busy acute NHS Trust.

AMS is a large CSU within St James Hospital comprising a dedicated surgical assessment unit and 12 in patient wards .We are a regional centre for urology, colorectal, gastroenterology, upper GI, HPB and renal services, as well as being responsible for the Leeds Liver Unit, one of a handful across the country.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will need to have an understanding of the A&E government targets and current issues that can affect the timely flow of patients through the hospital

The post holder will assist in the efficient and effective management of bed resources within the Trust. The provision of an effective service encompassing all Directorates is essential to successful patient flow across the Trust.

Good communication and organisational skills are essential to this role. The ideal candidates will have the ability to deliver performance targets, identify and implement any improvements in processes and practices, as well as the ability to train, develop and motivate staff.

The successful candidate will be expected to be an enthusiastic member of the team, making a valuable contribution to the performance of the service. They should have the ability to maintain an open and supportive relationship with their team, encouraging professional development and demonstrating flexibility within the role.

About us

You will be joining an experienced team who manage all acute and elective patient flow throughout the AMS CSU, a CSU that comprises 12 inpatient wards, endoscopy and a dedicated assessment unit. This job can be highly rewarding and essential to the safe and effective delivery of the care that the AMS core specialities (gastroenterology, urology, hepatology, upper GI, renal, colorectal and both acute and general surgery) are able to provide.

A large percentage of AMS patients will be assessed and admitted through the surgical assessment unit, therefore close working with and support of JSAU is to be expected.

Job responsibilities

Responsibilities for patient placement.

-Facilitate placement of emergency and urgent admission requests, whilst recognising the importance of elective work. Ensuring there is sufficient capacity to assist in the achievement of both Trust and National performance targets.

-The role will also require organisation of all internal transfers and repatriation to and from other Trusts.

-Analyse the beds situation and, using skills, knowledge and experience, ensure that beds are allocated appropriately and effectively for emergency and elective admissions to maximize patient care and the patient experience

-Ensure appropriate and effective allocation of beds to ensure that all patients are admitted to the correct bed first time

-Maintain a 'bed state' that accurately reflects the position of St James Hospital during the span of a shift

-To effectively communicate capacity and demand issues to the key staff as and when required

.

-Take personal responsibility for contributing to the patient flow teams working effectively, collaboratively and in a co-ordinated way.

-To ensure that during their shift, the placement of patients into beds is both safe and appropriate and supports patient flow in both emergency and elective streams

-Post holder will report to Clinical Matrons Site Operations both in and out of hours, providing senior support to ensure that best possible care is delivered in a safe manner.

-Post Holder will work closely with an array of multi- disciplinary and speciality teams. To succeed in this role, you will need to possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. You will also need to be able to deal with challenging situations in a fast-paced environment making independent decisions to avoid delays in the patient's journey, whilst acting in a calm and professional manner.

-Minimise patient moves ensuring all infection control guidelines are followed

Leadership and management- Investigate and respond to accidents, complaints, untoward incidents and other significant events

- Raise concerns with regards to risk, danger, malpractice or wrong doing by following the LTHT Whistleblowing policy and supporting processes.

- Actively promote and use the Leeds Improvement method to improve the quality and safety of the service

-- Promote evidence based practice, wherever possible

- Engages users and carers views on service delivery and development

- Implement policy and practice guidelines specific to the specialty, proposing changes where appropriate

- Contribute to policy and protocol development for speciality area

Support patients and their families communicating sensitive condition related information and ensuring they receive required information.

Education and Training

- Provide training and education of learners and other junior staff - Actively participate in the development of own personal development plan and performance review -

Health and safety /Risk management

-All staff are responsible for working with their colleagues to maintain and improve the quality of services provided to our patients and other service users.
