Job summary
The
Jobholder is responsible for the management of a defined caseload. The
jobholder carries continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs,
the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the
setting of standards of care. The jobholder will provide specialist nursing
care and advice to patients who require urological Nursing and will
contribute to the development of the speciality service. The jobholder will
ensure cost effective use of resources.
The
post holder will work with the Band 7 Benign CNS team leader to develop and
support our service for patients who require urological nursing within the
Leeds Teaching Hospitals.
The
Urology CNS will focus on adults of 16 years and over with Urology conditions
and will practice safely and effectively, fulfilling his/her professional
responsibility within his/her scope of practice.
The
Jobholder:
Will carry continuing responsibility for a defined caseload of patients.
Will provide advanced nursing expertise to patients attending with suspected
or diagnosed Benign Urological disease.
Will contribute to the multi-disciplinary team and network in the development
of the service.
This
role is based at the Paul Sykes Centre (Out-patients Department) at St James
University Hospital.
Working
Pattern
Monday-Friday
0730 hours till 1730 hours (4 day week) or
Monday
-Friday 8am till 4 pm
Main duties of the job
The
successful applicant will require an in-depth background, and knowledge of
Benign Urology nursing, excellent communication skills, a willingness to
develop and have the desire to continually improve patient care.
1.Acts
in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Code of Conduct.
2.
Provide a specialist nursing service for patients with Benign urological
disease who require support and treatment through the continuum of care.
3.
Work in conjunction with the Benign Team Vision and Purpose.

post will involve providing pathway driven care of patients with Lower
Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS), Bladder Pain Syndrome (BPS), Bladder stones,
Catheter care, Andrology and ongoing audit to influence expansion of the
service.

Provide leadership in clinical practice and act as a resource and role model
for urological disease practice within the Benign remit.

Create exchange of learning opportunities within the MDT in relation to
evidenced based Benign urological disease care delivery.

with urological conditions. The post-holder will provide support and advice
to patients and their families as well as acting as a resource to other
professionals.
To
undertake nurse led clinics in line with identified protocols and clinical
guidance. The list of clinics include:
1. Trial without catheter (TWOC)
2. Catheter change
3. Bladder Instillation service (Painful
Bladder Syndrome)
4. Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS)
One Stop Clinic
5. Lithotripsy
6. Erectile Dysfunction
7. Continence
Liaise
with medical team to report any significant clinical changes reported by the
patients and facilitate any recommendations following medical discussion.
To
demonstrate specialist skills and knowledge through expert nursing practice.
To
promote and maintain effective communication.
To
liaise with Clinical Lead and Team Leader on issues of service management and
development for Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust (LTHT) AND THE Urology Service.
To
review and develop written policies, protocols and guidance relevant to this
patient group, in conjunction with the Multidisciplinary team. Updated as
stipulated.
To
be responsible for own professional development and maintenance of standards
supported by Lead nurse and Team leader.
Accept
appropriate referrals from MDT colleagues.
Where
appropriate work collaboratively with MDT colleagues across Primary and
Secondary care to provide a seamless service delivery to the patient, family
and / carer as appropriate.
Identify
and promote specific symptom management strategies as well as the
identification of triggers which may cause exacerbation of symptoms. Provide
patients with appropriate self-management strategies and escalation pathways.
Contribute
to the design, development and implementation of education programmes and
resources for the patient, family and/ or carer in relation to urological
diseases thus empowering them to self- manage their condition.
Provide
mentorship for nursing colleagues as appropriate and create exchange of learning
opportunities within the MDT.
Use
outcomes of audit to improve service provision.

Benign Urology CNS team works alongside a large MDT (Urologists, Lead Nurse,
Advanced Clinical Practioners, Nurse Cystoscopy team, Clinical scientists and
Outpatient Nursing team) to ensure individualised programmes of care.
