Job summary

The Lung Cancer Screening Programme (LCSP) is aimed at detecting lung cancer in its early stages before symptoms appear. This is when there are more treatment options available and a better chance of cure. The programme involves an initial lung health check telephone appointment, and a low-dose CT scan.

Main duties of the job

The jobholder will assist in the overall implementation and evaluation of care as part of the multi professional team. The jobholder will deliver lung health checks and mobile unit outpatients appointments under indirect supervision and guidance from a registered practitioner undertaking delegated tasks within competency boundaries. The jobholder will contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care. The jobholder will have the knowledge to interpret information and be skilled in taking appropriate action(s) to achieve the planned outcome. The post holder will contribute to the maintenance of a safe clinical environment. The post holder will work in the LCSP office and on the mobile unit, which will be sited in several community locations around Leeds. The job holder will actively support the assessment and supervision of trainee or new assistant practitioners, students and clinical support workers. This will include leading and co-ordinating a team of clinical support workers. The jobholder will be expected to practice in accordance with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) policies, guidelines, standards and statutory requirements and operate within defined competency boundaries. The jobholder will work within the Leeds Lung Cancer Screening Programme team, in the office at Leeds General Infirmary and on the mobile Lung Cancer Screening unit as part of a multidisciplinary team.

An exceptional opportunity has emerged for a team of dynamic, forward-thinking Assistant Practitioners (APs) to work with the newly commissioned Lung Cancer Screening Programme (LCSP) within the Cardio Respiratory CSU. This is your chance to work on a new service from day 1 - helping to deliver low dose CT screening to those at highest risk of lung cancer and helping to tackle one of the biggest contributors to health inequalities in the UK. As an AP, you’ll work closely with the Nurse Specialist and wider LCSP team to support this vital programme, ensuring early detection, improved outcomes and a meaningful impact on communities most affected by lung cancer. If you’re passionate about innovation, health equity and making change that truly saves lives, this role offers a unique and rewarding challenge.

The jobholders will provide care and advice to patients undergoing Lung Cancer Screening and will contribute to the development of the speciality service.

Current service comprises the community mobile lung cancer screening unit which is located in different sites around Leeds and operates a 6 day service (Monday to Saturday). The jobholder will work within the Leeds LCSP team, in the office at Leeds General Infirmary and on the mobile Lung Cancer Screening unit as part of a multidisciplinary team delivering the city-wide Lung Cancer Screening Programme

Principal responsibilities include appointment management, clinical audit, health and safety quality assurance, conducting telephone Lung Health Checks, and delivery of Very Brief Advice (VBA) for smoking.
