Job summary

Locum Consultant in the department of Renal Medicine The Leeds Renal Service is seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant Nephrologist. The post will be 10 PA appointment and will be available from March 2026, initially for 6 months. There are also plans to advertise for a substantive consultant. The successful applicant should hold accreditation in Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of renal medicine, including the management and care of chronic haemodialysis and renal transplant patients. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic and supportive renal department with 17 consultant colleagues, an associate specialist and junior doctor team. The posts will be based at St Jamess University Hospital and will be predominantly clinical with responsibility as a member of consultant team for providing inpatient and outpatient care for nephrology, dialysis and renal transplant patients.

To work with colleagues to devise ways to benefit renal services through the closer integration of the Leeds renal service with primary care.

To share responsibility (with eight other consultant nephrologists) for the care of the Trust’s chronic haemodialysis patients, with specific responsibility for supervising the care of patients who dialyse at the satellite unit in Seacroft

To share with consultant colleagues responsibility for the staffing of specific renal outpatient clinics as per renal consultant team job plan.

To contribute to the care of patients following renal transplantation

To share out-of-hours clinical responsibilities with colleagues by participating in the renal consultant on call rota (1:15 for renal 24 hours)

To participate in the clinical supervision of all postgraduate trainees within the department.

To contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the Trust.

To develop appropriate research interests that will benefit the clinical service provided.

To demonstrate a willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional and national levels.

What you will bring to the role

This is a 10PA locum appointment for a Consultant Nephrologist, with special interests in renal transplant. The successful applicant will be employed by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT), and will work alongside existing consultants and contribute to the running of the renal service.

The renal service is based at St James’s University Hospital, and provides high quality care for the population of Leeds and the surrounding area and is the regional centre for renal transplantation. Although the main renal unit is within the St James’s University Hospital site; the renal service also has an outreach service providing nephrological review and dialysis support to inpatients at the Leeds General Infirmary.

The main renal unit at St James’s University Hospital has 42 inpatient beds on two wards, which provide inpatient care for nephrology, dialysis and renal transplant patients. This post will make a contribution to General (Internal) Medicine.

There is a 26 station outpatient dialysis unit, a 5 station inpatient dialysis unit, and an outpatient peritoneal dialysis unit on the St James’s Hospital site. The haemodialysis service also has a 32 station haemodialysis unit at Seacroft hospital site in Leeds, and satellite dialysis units in Halifax, Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Pontefract and Beeston.

The renal unit provides support for approximately 690 patients receiving haemodialysis, 74 receiving peritoneal dialysis, 26 on home haemodialysis and 1200 renal transplant patients. In the past two years over 350 acute renal transplants were performed.

The post holder will contribute to the care of nephrology patients take on the responsibility for the supervision of a cohort of haemodialysis patients and will undertake outpatient nephrology clinics and low clearance clinics in Leeds. They will also participate in the renal on call rota.
