Job summary

Applications are invited for a Senior Clinical Fellow (SCF) position within the Urgent Care Clinical Service Unit at St Jamess University Hospital, Leeds. The post, which is fixed-term for 12-months from 6th August 2025, is designed to provide excellent clinical training in Acute Internal Medicine with a focus on Same Day Emergency Care. There will also be an opportunity to contribute to QIP and service development within the department. Applicants must have completed Internal Medicine Year 3 training (or equivalent) and be confident to work at Registrar-level.

About us

You will join the Urgent Care Clinical Service Unit (CSU) at St Jamess University Hospital (SJUH) which comprises Acute Internal Medicine (AIM) and Emergency medicine (EM). Although post-holders will undertake most of their clinical duties within the Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC), they may be asked to contribute to the care of medical patients on the acute medicine admission units and in the Emergency Department.

Our department at SJUH is currently based in Chancellors Wing. It comprises two Acute Medical Units (one of which incorporates a High Observation Unit (HOBS)) and a Same Day Emergency Care service (with both a Medical Unit and Older Persons Unit) co-located with the Emergency Department.

Excellent experience will be provided in ambulatory care, admission avoidance, the management of acutely ill patients, on-going in-patient care, and discharge planning.

DUTIES OF THE POST

To contribute directly to patient care by, for example, reviewing patients, organising investigations, and acting on results, initiating and changing treatment, and speaking to patients and their relatives/carers about their illness and clinical progress.

To work collaboratively with colleagues in Emergency Medicine to promote alternatives to admission and to maximise the opportunities for Same Day Emergency Care.

To undertake essential administrative duties, including prescribing, writing electronic discharge letters, and liaising with colleagues in primary care.

Supporting the smooth running of the Virtual Acute Medical Unit.

To contribute to a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, working collaboratively with a large team of allied healthcare professionals, including a large team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners.

You will be provided with a tailored job plan in which time will be provided to lead on service development projects within SDEC.

Protected non-clinical time will be provided as described.
