Job summary

This is a locum appointment in Congenital Cardiac Surgery and will be available for immediate start for an experienced Consultant in Congenital Cardiac Surgery. The initial appointment will be for 12 months.

The post-holder will provide support to the congenital cardiac surgery service at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT).

The post covers the entire spectrum of paediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgery with the exception of transplantation. Applicants should have established skills in congenital cardiac surgery with at least 4 years experience at consultant level. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.

The post will be based at the Leeds General Infirmary campus, with paediatric cardiac services at the Childrens Hospital (Clarendon Wing) and adult congenital cardiac services in the adjacent Jubilee Wing. The post is a full-time (12 PAs, 48hrs) and managed in the Childrens Services CSU.

Main duties of the job

The post covers the entire spectrum of paediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgery with the exception of transplantation. The post holder will:

* Deliver care to patients with congenital cardiac conditions

Elective operating lists for both adults and paediatric congenital cardiac patients

Out-patient clinics

Supervision of patients

Care of in-patients on a on call rota (1 in 4)

Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings

About us

The post will be based at Leeds General Infirmary. The department serves a population of approximately 5.5 million in Yorkshire, Humberside and Northern Trent. Services include all aspects of specialist tertiary care of cardiac patients with the exception of transplantation. The annual workload of the department was pre-covid approximately 400 paediatric cardiac operations and 100 adult congenital operations, over 10,000 outpatient consultations, approximately 370 catheterisations per year. The unit is making progress with its waiting list and elective recovery plan to achieve pre-covid level standards and above.

The congenital cardiac surgery department is situated in the Jubilee Building at the Leeds General Infirmary. The department at Leeds General Infirmary houses adult congenital and paediatric services and is co-located with many other specialist services for both adults and children as well as obstetrics and neonatal services.

We have plans to advertise a further consultant cardiac surgery substantive post later in the coming year.

The department currently comprises 13 consultant paediatric cardiologists and 6 adult congenital cardiologists. In addition there is a cardiac radiologist and a consultant echosonographer.

OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

To deliver care to patients with congenital cardiac conditions

Elective and acute operating and perioperative care for both adults and paediatric congenital cardiac patients

Out-patient clinics

Supervision of junior staff

Care of in-patients on a on call rota (1 in 4)

Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings

To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals

To work with colleagues in congenital cardiac surgery to deliver acute on call (currently 1 in 4). This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours.

To contribute to research, teaching and new developments within the congenital cardiac surgery department. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in the department.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST

General Training and Qualifications

The successful applicant should either be on the Specialist Register or be able to provide evidence of experience at consultant level in a similar post outside the UK .. The latter will be assessed by references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Applicants must provide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevant Royal College (or equivalent) at the time of application, in order for their application to be progressed further.

Experience

The appointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of congenital cardiac surgery.

Clinical Audit

The appointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the lead in the following:

Mortality and morbidity meetings;

Clinical audit programmes;

Development and application of agreed clinical guidelines.

This is to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as a supporting programmed activity. It would be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance would be recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy).

In the discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected to maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing medical education.

TEACHING

The Trust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the University of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching and all Consultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.

The appointee will be expected, with colleagues to also contribute to the teaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for junior doctors in the congenital cardiac unit.
