Head of Nursing for the Operational Centre
The post:
Reporting to the Associate Director of
Operations with a professional responsibility to the Director of Nursing this
post is a great opportunity for someone wanting to develop their career in Nursing
and management. You will lead a defined portfolio to support the delivery of
high quality timely patient placement across the organisation supporting
effective day to day operational management across the Trust. In addition you
will provide support and input to Clinical Service Unit(s) within the Trust to
support delivery of the Trusts strategic direction and operational
performance.
The person:
With experience of successful operational nurse
management you will have strong nurse leadership and management skills as well
as experience of budgetary management, operational and business planning,
change management and influencing staff from a range of professional
backgrounds.
With good negotiating and influencing skills
you will be an effective leader and team player with the ability to work in a
diverse and complex organisation.

Main duties of the job
The Head of Nursing will be
responsible for the care and professional practice delivered. This would equate
to a CSM workforce of 10 whole time equivalent staff and Discharge Matron.
The role of the Head of
Nursing will include the requirement to engage with partners outside of the
organisation e.g. to collaborate in city-wide and national improvement projects
and developing relationships with service users.
Services provided within
the Operation Centre have a significant city and regional role in providing
healthcare.

- The Head of Nursing has responsibility for the leadership and line management of the Clinical Site Managers supports the Director of Nursing who is the named and identified lead for all issues of nursing practice within.
- Identified as a senior nurse within the Operation Centre responsible for decision making where practice or service delivery issues cross specialities or require cross speciality leadership.
- Has responsibility for the delivery of safe and clinically effective care - providing assurance evidence in this regard to the Associate Director of Operations and the Director of Nursing (Operations) and Chief Operating Officer (COO)
- Has line management responsibility for the Clinical Site Managers
- Leads and manages the clinical services in clinical areas/specialities during out of hours periods.
- Deputises for the Associate Director of Operations when required.
- Utilises leadership and management skills to ensure the effective planning and delivery of nursing care and services across CSUs planning for seasonal variations in case mix and workload and collaborating with other Heads of Nursing where cross CSU working is required.
- Provides credible, visible, and effective leadership, to the Clinical Site Management team within the Operation Centre.
Through performance management and monitoring, ensures essential quality standards are achieved and improved. Leads and participates in performance review programmes throughout the clinical areas.
- Contributes to the leadership of nursing and midwifery within the Trust as a member of the professional forum.
- Develops mechanisms to enable Clinical Site Managers to develop and strengthen their leadership and management skills in order to meet the responsibilities of their roles.
- Actively works to support and empower Senior Sisters/Charge Nurses to develop and utilise their clinical leadership skills. Enabling them to assume appropriate levels of authority to undertake their role effectively to support and develop the leadership within their wards and teams.
Takes the lead on defined and time limited projects or work programmes across the organisation as identified by the Associate Director of Operations and Director of Nursing (Operations) to support the delivery of Trust priorities, national and local professional priorities and objectives.
Takes the lead on defined areas of professional practice on behalf of the Director of Nursing.
- Participates in Trust initiatives to develop and improve clinical practice and patient care, providing expert advice and current service provision future developments.
- Participates in the Trust on-call rota
- Actively promote and use the Leeds Improvement method to improve the quality and safety of the service
