Junior Teaching Fellow - Older Persons Mental Health

Job summary

The post would suit an individual aiming to pursue a career in Old Age Psychiatry who wishes to develop an interest in teaching. The successful candidate will be involved in co- ordinating and providing the undergraduate clinical teaching programme (5 sessions per week perannual average) and will undertake 5 sessions of clinical duties and professional development.

The main clinical duties include the support of inpatients and there will also be the opportunity to carry out some outpatient work and home visits

The successful candidate will work predominently into the inpatient mental health wards at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, providing high-quality assessment and management of older adults aged 65 and over with organic and functional mental health diagnosis. You will be part of a well-established multidisciplinary team delivering comprehensive assessment and supporting safe, timely discharge.

Main duties of the job

  • Clerking, assessing and managing older patients
  • Developing individualised care plans
  • Conducting advanced care planning, DNAR and end-of-life discussions with patients and families
  • Participating in daily MDT meetings
  • Liaising closely with nursing teams , community teams, GPs and care homes to facilitate safe discharge
  • Making referrals to other services as required
  • Contributing to audit, quality improvement and service development
  • Participating in teaching for junior doctors, medical students, nurses and AHPs
  • Engaging in departmental educational activities and postgraduate training
  • Supporting Trust-wide clinical governance, M\&M and Safecare processes

Ideally the successful candidate will have completed Foundation Training (or the equivalent) as well as Core Psychiatry training. Specialty doctors are also encouraged to apply.

This post is ideal for individuals with are studying towards their CASC exam, or someone who have already achieved this qualification.The post includes the opportunity to undertake a formal qualification in Medical Education (Certificate or Diploma) during their employment within the Trust with an assigned provider.

Any formal qualification will be undertaken during the year of employment within the Trust and is subject to a financial cap (international applicants may not be eligible for this fundingand if wishing to pursue a qualification, this may need to be funded personally.
