Job summary

The advertised post is for a part time consultant in Emergency Medicine (5PA), based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Gateshead. These posts will consolidate the Consultant presence in the Emergency Care Centre (ECC), which opened in February 2015. The successful candidates will work as part of a team with the existing twelve Emergency Medicine Consultants and one Specialist Doctor. Applications from candidates with sub-specialist interests or qualifications are very much encouraged.

Main duties of the job

The appointed Consultant will be expected to collaborate with multidisciplinary professional colleagues to strive to ensure the best, most streamlined levels of care for our patients. We operate an open and honest culture within the organization.He/she is expected to observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures, and to follow the approved standing orders, financial instructions and standards of conduct. In particular, where he/she manages employees of the Trust, he/she will be expected to follow both national employment law and local personnel policies and procedures. He/she will be expected to make sure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in care of patients to be able to contact him/her when on call.There are opportunities for the appointed consultant to develop a specialist interest to complement the department and Trust.

ED floor cover involves the direct supervision of the delivery of emergency care to patients presenting to the ED. In addition to standard clinical ED care, these sessions includes: support of the ECC streaming process, close partner working with the ED nurse coordinator to facilitate smooth ED patient flow and direct supervision of junior doctors and practitioners.The EM ward round activity includes the review of patients admitted under the care of the ED team. This patient group includes patients with head and chest trauma, not requiring care in a major trauma centre.The weekday ED clinic assesses / reviews patients with various conditions, including: soft tissue injuries, burns, head injuries and chest injuries.Dedicated clinical radiology review sessions support the filing and actioning of imaging results / reports.On call commitments are non-resident, based on the ability to return to the department within 30 minutes.

  • Full GMC Registration, with licence to practise, or eligible for full GMC registration
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Emergency Medicine, or within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training at time of interview.
  • FRCEM or equivalent
  • ALS, APLS, ATLS provider status or equivalent

Desirable

  • ALS, APLS, ATLS Instructor
  • MIMMS, EMSB
  • CEM Core ultrasound skills

Experience

Essential

  • Significant Experience in Emergency Medicine
  • Involvement in clinical audit and quality improvement
  • Experience in teaching and supervision of junior colleagues and medical students

  • Educational Supervision experience or training
  • Published research / Publication in Journals
  • Presentation at regional, national or international EM meetings
