Job summary
To lead on the improving the standard of intrapartum risk assessment and fetal monitoring, in accordance with element 4 of the Saving Babies' Lives Care Bundle (Version 2): effective fetal monitoring during labour.
To support and work with the Practice Development Midwife to provide comprehensive training for all midwives and obstetricians to increase their knowledge and competence in identifying fetal well-being, potential fetal compromise and actual fetal compromise in all clinical settings and improve clinical decision making.
Develop and maintain policies, procedures and practices with regard to all fetal monitoring (both intermittent auscultation and electronic fetal monitoring) and ensure all relevant assessments and standards are complied with.
Contribute to the achievement of national standards for maternity at the appropriate level with a particular focus on ensuring standards relating to fetal monitoring are implemented and monitored.
The post holder will be responsible for the ongoing development and implementation of fetal wellbeing training and improvement alongside the lead Consultant.
Have an understanding and insight into risk within the maternity service; attending case reviews, contributing to complaints and ensuring learning from any local, regional or national reports or cases is fed back into the service.
The post holder will be responsible, alongside the lead midwife for risk, for completing monthly audits of fetal monitoring standards
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work towards delivery of the aims of the North East and North Cumbria regional fetal monitoring and training faculty groups and will represent Gateshead at regional meetings
Ensure the delivery of the highest quality, clinical effective care, and patient experience, prioritising and utilising research and in collaboration with colleagues in everyday practice.
Demonstrate in depth specialist knowledge, skills and innovative practice in the area of Fetal Monitoring, leading the delivery of appropriate evidence based care, and advanced practice.
Ensure that all midwives and obstetricians providing antenatal and intrapartum care undertake the trust approved CTG competency assessment
To provide monthly Fetal Monitoring training compliance data to the department and contribute to compliance reports for external and internal action plans
Demonstrate appropriate expert practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
Be visible and proactive in all areas, lead discussion regarding fetal assessment, embed/promote 'fresh eyes', AID
Assist in the investigation of incidents pertaining to poor birth outcomes, implementing any recommendations arising from these investigations.
