Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for motivated individuals, interested in pursuing careers in Gynaecological Oncology to join a reputable and established team of clinicians and researchers. Based at the QE Hospital in Gateshead, the Northern Gynaecological Oncology Centre (NGOC) offers experience in developing extensive clinical and specialised surgical skills,in addition to pursuit of clinical research. NGOC offers a broad range of surgery, and is famed for its ultra-radical surgical repertoire, and early adoption of innovation. It is a European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) accredited Centre of Excellence for Ovarian Cancer.
This post is for 12 months initially and is extendable depending on the research project up to a maximum of 24 months. The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to lead on clinical research projects in the field of vulva cancer and ovarian cancer which will lead to relevant publications. The post is split 50:50 between research and clinical commitments, and allows the successful candidate to not only gain research credentials, but also allow ample opportunity to gain experience in the clinical and surgical care of patients with gynaecological cancer. he post holder will require excellent communication skills, providing care to patients with a wide range of disease presentations. Communication, team working and organizational skills are paramount in the care of our patients.
Main duties of the job
Research Element (50% component) - two specific clinical research projects assigned to the successful candidate in the field of vulva and ovarian cancer. with opportunities to collaborate withother Fellows/gynaecological oncology trainees. The applicant will be expected to make a significant contribution to the research aspect of work, under a named research supervisor.
Clinical Element (50% component) - The post holder's clinical duties will be across a range of clinical settings. Work on the surgical ward encompasses arranging investigations, selecting appropriate treatment and providing peri-operative care. There is also a requirement to provide care to gynaecological oncology patients attending our SDEC. The post holder will contribute to a variety of outpatient clinics seeing both new and follow-up patients, as well as colposcopy and vulva patients. They will be able to assist in theatre and will have the opportunity to develop surgical skills.
The successful candidate will take part in a full shift rota, with 6 other trainees caring for gynaecological oncology patients only. There is no obstetric or general gynaecology on call.This is a non-resident on call 1:7 on a 2-tier rota. When first on call, you will be supported by a Subspecialty Fellow in the first period and a consultant off-site. This post is EWTD compliant. The post holder will be required to demonstrate an awareness of the limitations of their practice.
