Job summary

To work within Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust. Be experienced in midwifery and have experience in the field of clinical research.

Support safe conduct of research in accordance with the International Conference on Harmonisation and for clinical trials in accordance with the International Conference on Harmonisation - Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP) guidelines and UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research provide assurance that the rights, safety and wellbeing of trial participants are protected at all times.

Take responsibility for the co-ordination and management of clinical research projects collaborating with key personnel throughout the network to ensure continued care and support for patients involved in clinical trials.

Responsible for the safe administration of drugs and from unexpected side-effects of drugs and other treatment modalities.Have sufficient skills and experience to enable patients to make informed choices concerning their involvement in the clinical trials by providing advice and information and acting as the patient advocate.

Demonstrate ongoing professional development.

To adhere to the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Practice and code of conduct.

Main duties of the job

o Work with a high level of autonomy taking delegated responsibility from Consultants for clinical decision making

o Be familiar with all clinical trials the maternity department is involved in, and to educate staff about the trials. Promote recruitment of patients by ensuring screening of eligible patients occurs.

o Seek out new potential clinical trials and liaise with relevant clinical staff to assess feasibility, complete expressions of interest for new trials as applicable and present at the R&D Council Meeting.

o Be responsible for maintaining equipment and documentation required for trial participation

o Collect and enter data on trial patients.

o Perform Clinical tasks such as phlebotomy, cannulation and assist the maternity unit in the care of trial patients.

o Undertake specialist training to ensure compliance with clinical trials regulatory frameworks and demonstrate, expert knowledge of clinical process and related issues.

o Be accountable for own professional actions, work autonomously without direct supervision, collaborate with, and report directly to consultants

o Demonstrate specialised knowledge relevant to area of practice.

o Assume responsibility for continuous education by attending related workshops, seminars, conferences and courses as well as keeping up to date on current publications.
