JUNIOR CLINICAL FELLOW - GENERAL SURGERY

The opportunity has arisen to appoint Clinical Fellows in the Department of General Surgery, within Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead.

This post offers the opportunity to gain further experience and training in a variety of sub-specialities . The post is available from August 2025 for a fixed term period of 12 months to July 2026.

The post is ideal for candidates who have completed Foundation training or equivalent and are awaiting appointment to a Core Surgical Training post or those seeking further surgical training prior taking up an ST post. The department has a good record of post holders going on to gain Core and ST Surgical Training posts.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will be involved in delivering care to emergency and elective surgical patients across a variety of settings. Clinical duties will involve ward based care, out-patient clinics and working within the operating theatre department. On-call duties are included within this role.

The post includes a significant teaching role and successful candidates will be expected to organise and participate in varied teaching opportunities particularly undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate will be eligible to apply for support with postgraduate teaching qualifications. Clinical research and audit facilities are available and strongly encouraged.

Although the post is not educationally approved as part of postgraduate training, a training programme is provided along with learning opportunities and Consultant supervision.

The post has a significant commitment to undergraduate teaching especially during the Hospital Based Practice and Foundations of Clinical Practice courses for medical students. The successful candidates will be expected to plan, organize, and deliver teaching. There is an effective Education Department within the Trust with whom the successful candidate will be expected to liaise regarding teaching commitments. There will be support available for appropriate formal study leave and for studying towards higher teaching and educational qualifications. Enrolment on regional higher educational teaching courses is encouraged and supported financially.

Clinical audit and research facilities are available and are strongly encouraged.
