Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated person to work for Bereavement Services team based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

We are looking for an outstanding individual to join our team in supporting both bereaved families and Medical Examiners team.

Candidates should have experience in administration, working in a busy environment and have worked with the general public. You must be able to prioritise, have good organisational skills and be flexible to support the needs of the service. Computer literacy with good attention to detail is essential.

Main duties of the job

The ability to display excellent communication skills is also key to this role, whilst understanding the importance of patient confidentiality and respecting both patients & staff alike.

Based in the North East of England we provide a range of hospital and community health services from our leading facilities, including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Blaydon urgent care centre and Bensham Hospital, all within Gateshead.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To coordinate the provision of bereavement services within the Trust. To provide a professional and sympathetic service to the recently bereaved. The post holder is expected to demonstrate skills and aptitude in the care of the bereaved, who occasionally could be extremely distressed. The post holder will be required to handle a diverse workload and demonstrate a proficiency in prioritising work schedules; liaising with colleagues to ensure a prompt response to urgent service demands.

  • Is accountable and responsible to the Lead for Clinical Effectiveness
  • Coordinates the day to day running of the bereavement service including all administration duties.
  • Supports the Lead for Clinical Effectiveness with any service developments.
  • Supports collection and input of audit data.
  • Works in collaboration with the Medical Examiner Office to help support and signpost bereaved relatives and carers

The post will require an individual who can demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and emotional maturity that incorporates sensitivity and empathy. These skills are required to:

Assist in the provision of caring and empathetic support to the bereaved

Assist in the communication of information to staff from other departments e.g. Chapel of Rest, Registrars etc.

Help to maintain excellent relationships with both statutory and voluntary agencies involved in supporting the bereaved.

Supports communication/plans to raise the profile of bereavement support across the organisation through:

Signpost to services who will assist in meeting the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of the bereaved individuals

Assisting in meeting the information needs of the bereaved

Experience of dealing with difficult situations.

Promotes effective communication with individuals regardless of language, culture or ability.

Experience of working within the NHS

Educated to GCSE level or evidence of equivalent level of experience.

Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills

Experience in administration duties and keyboard skills

IT skills including a working knowledge of health care systems

Ability to demonstrate a willingness to update knowledge and skills

Can demonstrate good organisational skills

Can demonstrate discretion, tact and confidentiality at all times

Able to work flexible to meet the needs of the service

Able to work alone and as part of a team
