We are looking for someone to lead the fluency provision for children and young people in Gateshead.
Engaging with families, education staff and other primary partners, the post holder will work across clinics and schools in Gateshead to provide therapy and support. Leading innovation of the fluency provision in Gateshead, the post hold will work as part of a dedicated Speech and Language Therapy team who are dedicated to embracing new ways of working.

Main duties of the job
- To provide a Highly Specialist service (including initial assessment, diagnosis and implementation of specialist SLT treatment programmes) for children and young people presenting with Fluency Disorders and co-occurring Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).
- To act as a specialist resource within the Community Paediatric SLT Team providing clinical supervision, guidance, shadowing opportunities and mentorship regarding fluency disorders and caseload management within the community clinic service.
- To co-ordinate and support a team of SLTs and SLT Assistants in delivering appropriate interventions and developing services within clinic and education settings across Gateshead.
- To lead service development within Fluency Disorders.
- To provide advanced support and training to other staff and outside professionals.
- To provide group therapy and training sessions relating to Fluency Disorders.
- To deputise for Clinical Lead in CSLT as required.
- To be involved with Safeguarding Children cases as required
- To act as an Expert Witness at SEND Tribunals as required

- To autonomously provide in-depth assessment, diagnosis and appropriate highly specialist speech and language intervention for pre-school and school age patients referred to the Community Paediatric Team with specific Fluency Disorders and SLCNs within community clinic settings.
- To provide advice and support to other SLTs on highly specialist speech and language therapy approaches, Eg Palin Parent-Child Interaction, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Family communication therapy, fluency shaping.
- To make differential diagnosis following assessment and develop care plans based on this assessment that take into account a range of factors including evidence, best practice and the views of the children and others involved in their care.
- To act as a specialist resource within the Community Paediatric SLT Team providing clinical supervision, guidance, shadowing. opportunities and mentorship regarding fluency disorders and caseload management within the community clinic service.
- Deliver hands on clinical care to a designated case load of patients within Gateshead as a caseload holder for defined groups of patients.
- Supervision and leadership of individuals within the Community Paediatric Clinical Team, with accountability and responsibility for the safe delivery of all aspects of patient care within service portfolio as identified by the Community Paediatric SLT Clinical Lead.
- Support the community services senior management team in continuous service improvements and support the delivery of transformational projects within areas of accountability.
- To provide and receive complex information to/from patients, their family / carers and other health professionals that may require persuasive negotiating and empathetic skills.
- To demonstrate highly developed skills when communicating with patients, relatives and carers where there may be barriers to understanding e.g. social communication difficulties, learning difficulties, mental health problems, where there is fear or pain and for people who have English as their second language and require an interpreter.
- To make referrals to other relevant professionals and continuously develop links with them regarding overall patient care and service provision.
- To train staff from other professions particularly those involved with children with SLCN.
- To establish links with key professionals and professional bodies within this organisation and network outside the organisation both locally and nationally.
- To act as a deputy for the Clinical Lead as required.
