An opportunity is available for a highly motivated Band 6 Physiotherapist to join the Physiotherapy department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead as a Specialist Physiotherapist rotating through a range of specialist acute services.
This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Specialist Band 6 Physiotherapist using specialist clinical skills and clinical reasoning to provide a high quality Physiotherapy service to acute inpatient services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.
The post holder will be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and will rotate every 8 months. The rotations will be inpatient based but the post holder will also have the opportunity to provide assessment and evidence based treatments for patients who require outreach, outpatient follow up and community based group rehabilitation.
You will be required to work a shift pattern between the hours of 08:00 - 17:00 and will be expected to participate in 7 day working rotas; including weekends, bank holidays and twilight shifts (12:00 - 20:00).This post does not include an on-call requirement.
Main duties of the job
To perform advanced physiotherapeutic assessment of patients with diverse presentations and complex conditions, to provide a diagnosis and develop and deliver an individualised treatment programme.
To be responsible for your own caseload and a defined area of the service, working without direct supervision.
Responsible to the band 7 advanced physiotherapist practitioner in the specialized clinical areas.
To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team to deliver a holistic patient-centered approach to care.
To regularly liaise with MDT members including those from heath, social services and voluntary agencies to ensure an integrated and comprehensive service is provided.
To ensure that patients are identified for prompt discharge and handover to community services.
To provide leadership for more junior staff, as agreed with senior staff.
To support the band 7 team lead physiotherapist in planning, coordinating, and delivering the service provided to patients and to assist in the development, planning and progression of service provision.
To deputise for the band 7 team lead physiotherapist in their absence as required.
To supervise other registered and unregistered staff within the team
To supervise physiotherapy students on clinical placements.
To participate in CPD and develop skills and knowledge through participation in the in service training scheme.
Maintaining records as an autonomous practitioner.
To be an active participant in the twilight and 7 day working rota.

Assist the band 7 team lead physiotherapist to provide leadership and support to staff.
The rotations include: Emergency care, based in purpose build Emergency care centre. The post holder will work with the Physiotherapy advanced practitioner and the Emergency care team in developing their emergency care skills at front of house. They will develop the skills to be able to provide a timely, safe and effective Physiotherapy service to patients admitted with a medical condition.
Critical care and Surgery: led by a Physiotherapy Advanced Practitioner. The post holder will develop skills in Critical care, critical care Rehabilitation pathway and general surgery during this rotation. They will work as part of a team providing palliative care services to the onsite palliative care unit and will have the opportunity to increase their knowledge in this area. Gateshead is a regional hub for breast cancer and gynaecological oncology services and the post holder will work as part of a physiotherapy team who has specialist skills in the management of patients accessing these services, including lyphoedema management.
Older Persons: led by a Physiotherapy Advanced Practitioner in Older Persons. The post holder will develop skills in the management of older persons and frailty. They will work as part of a team providing Physiotherapy to specialist older persons wards which includes a Dual Care ward for patients with Delirium.
Cardio/Respiratory: led by a Physiotherapy Advanced Practitioner in Cardio/Respiratory. The Post holder will develop skills in the management of acute and chronic respiratory and cardiac conditions. They will work closely with the Physiotherapy team in this clinical area and the specialist nurses to deliver a service to the respiratory and cardiac wards as well as cardiac rehabilitation and pulmonary rehabilitation.
Acute Stroke: led by a Physiotherapy Advanced Practitioner in Neurology. The Post holder will develop skills in the management of acute stroke based on a new, purpose built rehabilitation unit. They will work closely with the Physiotherapy team and the specialist MDT to deliver rehabilitation to patients following acute stroke.
Orthopaedics: led by a Physiotherapy Team Lead in Orthopaedics. The post holder will develop skills in the management of patients who have undergone orthopedic surgery or injury. working across elective and trauma wards and community setting.
The successful applicant will need to demonstrate experience in the core areas of Physiotherapy as a Band 5. You will be able to provide specialised Physiotherapy treatment plans using good clinical reasoning skills. Experience in an NHS hospital is advantageous but not essential.
You will be committed to personal and team development and act as a professional role model for Therapy services. You will be able to demonstrate leadership skills and will be expected to carry out clinical education and supervision to develop all staff and students within the team. Experience of clinical supervision and clinical education is desirable.
The post holder must be keen to take on new challenges and will be involved in supporting continuous shaping and development of the clinical areas to meet any changes in service delivery and to ensure a high quality of care to all patients. Previous involvement in service improvement and audit is therefore advantageous but not essential.
