Specialty Doctor - Inpatient Psychiatry
1 year Fixed Term Contract
We are seeking to recruit a suitably qualified and experienced Specialty doctor with S12 approval to join our team on Lavender ward.
Lavender Ward is a mixed 18 bedded ward. The ward is based at Springfield University Hospital, 15 Springfield Drive, London, SW17 0YF. Lavender Ward forms part of the inpatient provision of the Trust's Acute and Urgent Care Service Line, which includes 8 acute adult wards and a PICU, based on 2 sites, Springfield Hospital in Tooting, and Tolworth Hospital in Surbiton. We are due to open an acute mixed gender short stay ward on Springfield site in June 2026.
We are a progressive, financially stable mental health trust which has been rated 'good' by the CQC both overall and specifically for our acute & urgent care services.
Main duties of the job
The Acute & Urgent Care Service Line comprises Acute General Psychiatric Wards on two hospital sites, intensive care unit, a psychiatric decision unit, acute care co-ordination and advanced clinical practice teams, home treatment and street triage teams, perinatal psychiatry, liaison psychiatric teams at three general hospitals, and two recovery cafs. All our clinicians are able to participate in a Trustwide quality improvement programme.
We are investing in further improvements to our mental health services, including a major redevelopment programme on both the Springfield and Tolworth sites.

To be successful in this role, candidates are expected to have completed 2 years Foundation studies i.e. completion of FY1 and FY2 (or equivalent two years) as well as 2 years at Core trainee level (i.e. CT1 and CT2 or equivalent), and the appointment would be at a grade based on the qualifications and experience of the applicant. The post will be initially for 12 months. But there is the possibility that the post may be extended by mutual agreement and subject to availability of funding.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
Essential
- At least four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a parttime or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or equivalent experience and competencies.
- Experience of acute adult psychiatric inpatient care
- Experience of urgent/emergency psychiatric assessment
Desirable
- Experience of writing reports of and attending Managers' Hearings and MHA tribunals
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
Essential
- Broad knowledge of the biological, psychological and social determinants of mental disorders in adults and evidence-based management interventions
- Knowledge of main treatment approaches for severe mental illness including psychopharmacological interventions.
- Ability to provide medical and mental health assessments, formulate diagnoses and initiate treatment plans.
Desirable
- Up to date knowledge and skills of physical health in general keeping with role as a doctor.
