Bed Manager (Acute Care Coordination Centre)

Job summary

We are currently recruiting Band 6 Bed Managers for our Acute Care Coordination Centre (ACCC). The post is based at Springfield Hospital.

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated nurse or equivalent clinician to be part of a Team that is at the heart of the Acute and Urgent Care Service Line in managing bed capacity and demand. As well as keeping the flow of patients moving through our acute wards, you will also have a key role in managing any operational issues out of hours that might affect the three hospital sites and can impact the safe and efficient functioning of the service. This is a full-time post and an exciting opportunity for an experienced Band 5 or Band 6 clinician who is seeking a different challenge.

This is an exciting time to join the team as we expand and move to a fully computerised system that will in the future allow us to predict and prepare for future demand. The successful candidates will be actively involved in service development and improvement.

This opportunity will provide you with an excellent opportunity to develop your skills in management, leadership, problem-solving as well as decision-making and interagency working.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will co-ordinate and collate real time information on current and predicted bed availability and facilitate the effective use of the Trust acute bed capacity. This role is central to the flow of patients within the acute service line.

The successful candidates will have a sound clinical background with effective decision-making skills and the ability to work as part of a team. You will be an experienced and competent nurse or equivalent clinician. You will be confident in using RIO (patient electronic record system) and have a good knowledge of excel. You must also have good listening, communication skills and problem-solving skills as well as the ability to work under pressure in challenging situations where conflict may arise. A good understanding of the London Compact Agreement and Clinical Prioritisation framework is also desirable.

Job responsibilities

  • Following the Trust Bed Management Policy and its processes and escalations.
  • Updating all relevant processes, forms and documentation on RIO, Ulysses and other relevant Healthcare Records and ensuring Daily Bed Capacity & Demand Data submission.
  • Attending the relevant meetings in relation to bed management.
  • Ensuring that patients, who are referred for admission, have the required assessments and testing completed by the referrer prior to admission.
  • Supporting the Team Manager in carrying out internal audits for quality assurance.
  • Checking that all requests for capacity are added to the system once screened in line with the Bed Management Policy and London Compact.
  • Being familiar with the Trusted Assessment Framework and Clinical Prioritisation as well as the Trusts Bed Prioritisation scores.
  • Escalating any bed management issues in a timely manner to the Team manager during office hours and the Out of Hours Coordinator during out of hours
  • Updating out-of-area bed states on RIO and informing IM&T when changes on bed states are required.
  • Reporting any inaccuracies on the dashboard bed state and the waiting list to Team Manager.
  • Following the BRAG Status Action Cards from the Bed Management Policy
  • Supervising junior staff
  • Escalating any disputes of responsibility to the Team manager, Clinical Service Lead and out of hours the out of hours coordinator.
  • May be called upon to offer support to the Crisis Hub out of hours

Essential

  • Current professional registration in relevant clinical subject/practice e.g. RMN, OT, Social Work, psychology or equivalent relevant experience in health, social care or voluntary sector
  • Evidence of post qualification training/education
  • Ongoing evidence of continuing professional development
  • A commitment to completing full quality improvement development as outlined in the trust strategy

Desirable

  • Training in providing supervision, mentorship or equivalent, or willingness to undertake training.
  • Post Graduate degree (in relevant subject)
  • To have completed or be working towards accredited courses which enable potential development
  • Recognised training that supports clinical practice ( Psychosocial Intervention or DBT)
