Job summary

We are looking for one part time [substantive] Consultant, who will work with the national neuropsychiatry service at St George's Hospital. You will work alongside consultant colleagues and an MDT. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a dynamic team and a growing service.

You will join neuropsychiatry service based at St George's hospital which is closely allied to the Atkinson Morley Regional Neurosciences Centre. It is an outpatient service which covers over 3-million population and receives referrals from neurologists, psychiatrists or from GPs.

A wide range of neuropsychiatric conditions are assessed and managed within the service including neuropsychiatric co-morbidities associated with various neurological conditions, functional neurological disorders and other organic psychiatric conditions. In addition, the service provides assessment and advice to patients in various neurosciences wards at Atkinson Morley Wing, St George's Hospital.

You will work alongside a specialty doctor, trainees, psychologists and specialist nurse. You will also liaise with various neurosciences clinicians and two consultant neuropsychiatrists for neurorehabilitation at St George's.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic and dynamic consultant psychiatrist to join this effective, friendly and progressive team.

This post is based at Grosvenor wing, St George's Hospital. The post holder will work closely with the existing neuropsychiatry consultants employed by South West London and St George's MH NHS Trust, sharing responsibility for general neuropsychiatry outpatients and inpatient work. You will also work with a consultant neuropsychiatrist in neurorehabilitation who is appointed by St George's Healthcare NHS Trust.

The post holder will liaise with a multidisciplinary team within the team and at the neurosciences centre. The post holder, in conjunction with other members of the multidisciplinary team, will be responsible for assessing and developing treatment plans for neuropsychiatric problems in the outpatient setting. The post holder will also provide consultation and commit to supervision of other team members as required and cross cover as appropriate within the team.

The post holder will have an expertise in diagnosing and treating mental health problems associated with various neurological conditions, functional neurological disorder and other neuropsychiatric conditions. The post holder will contribute to strategy for developing neuropsychiatry services and for implementing research and audit in this area.

Job responsibilities

  • Contribute towards clinical input in the team working closely with the consultant colleagues and have clinical responsibility for adult patients within the Neuropsychiatry Service.
  • Manage a range of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions, including functional neurological disorder.
  • Carry out new patient assessments and advise on treatment for neuropsychiatric patients on neurosciences wards and outpatients.
  • Provide weekly ward round to patients on the neuroscience wards at St Georges Hospital.
  • Liaise with neurosciences and mental health colleagues in the community teams, specialist services or inpatient settings, IAPT and general practice.
  • The appointee will be clinically responsible for managing a caseload of neuropsychiatry outpatients and the associated administration and liaison with colleagues and other stakeholders.
  • Outpatient clinics consist of one new patient for 1.5 hour and 4 follow-up patients for 30 minutes each. Hence the ratio for new vs follow- up patients is 1:4.
  • The case load is not a defined number in the regional neuropsychiatry service and depends on the patients currently being followed up in a clinic. The caseload could vary and should be proactively managed by the post holder including timely discharge planning. There is no requirement to do CPA. Caseload will be regularly reviewed with the associate clinical director.
  • In addition, the post holder will work closely with the Foundation Years, Core and Specialty Trainees to provide assessment and advice to various neurosciences wards and work with the consultant in weekly ward round. The post holder will be expected to work as a member of neuropsychiatry team and work closely with neurosciences colleagues.
  • Ensuring assessment reports, outcome measures, diagnoses are timely and appropriately documented.
  • To maintain clinical records in accordance with the GMC and Trust standards and to adhere to the GMC Code of Conduct.
  • To ensure, with other members of the Team, that data quality measures including risk assessment are appropriate and updated.
  • To participate in implementation of statutory requirements of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act. Should be Section 12 Approved.
  • Where problems arise, the post holder will be afforded robust support by her/his Lead Consultant, Associate Clinical Director, Clinical Director and where necessary the Medical Director and Chief Executive.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Primary Medical degree.
  • MRCPsych, or equivalent.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry or eligible for such inclusion on the Specialist Registrar within three months of completing their CCT.
  • Section 12 (2) approval of the Mental Health Act One year training in neuropsychiatry at ST level or more than 1 year experience as a neuropsychiatry consultant.
  • Completed minimum of three years full time training in approved higher psychiatric training scheme.
  • A detailed knowledge of main treatment approaches for severe mental illness including psychopharmacological interventions
