Job summary

Corner House is part of the National Deaf Child and Family Service at South West London and St. George's Mental Health Trust. Corner House is an inpatient and day patient unit providing Tier 4 care to children and young people from the UK, age 8 - 17 years.

Corner House aim to reduce and manage risk whilst the child/young person's mental state is assessed, treated and stabilised during which a planned returned to their community, offering therapeutic support and education is formalised. Corner House provides 24 hour care to meet the needs of the child/young person and their families/carers following assessment by members of the Corner House Team.

Corner House provides a Mental Health Service for deaf children and their families.. All of the children/young people admitted are deaf and are likely to use a variety of communication means, including British Sign Language (BSL) and Sign Supported English (SSE).

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for dynamic Advanced Nurse Practitioner to join the team of highly motivated and committed MDT within Deaf Inpatient service. We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic individual to join our well-established team within Deaf CAMHS Service. The post holder must be fluent BSL level 2, will deliver and coordinate expert care for those young people 8 up to the age of 18 years. You will support young people carers and families. You will work with the Matron to develop training for staff as well as support team in managing young people with these complex conditions that require specialist assessment and treatment. You will be joining a supportive and collaborative multidisciplinary team

The post holder must have excellent clinical and teaching skills, be able to work with different groups of staff and have excellent communication and organisational skills. You must be able to work well as member of a team, identify training/ learning gaps and put together plans to support the team.

Clinical

  • To be responsible for managing and prioritizing young people with severe mental health, psychological emotional and behavioral problems.
  • To provide appropriate therapy aspart of a multi-disciplinary assessment andtreatment plan.
  • To be responsible for implementing a range of group work interventions focusing on life skills training, motivational and creative activities, systemic, psychological and psychotherapeutic interventions for individual patients, and carers, families and groups.
  • To be responsible for recording clinical work and communicating, both orally and in writing, in a skilled and constructive manner highly complex or distressing information, for example regarding the experience and effects of anorexia and other severe eating disorders.
  • To work in close liaison with other services including health and social care.
  • To act as care coordinator, where appropriate, taking responsibility for initiating planning and review of care plans.

Professional

  • In conjunction with the Matron, Ward Manager will ensure that all nursing, healthcare assistants and support staff receive appropriate clinical supervision.
  • In conjunction with the Matron and other Band 7 nurses as above monitor performance of this staff group and take action if necessary to maintain standards and quality within the Trust clinical governance framework and complaints, disciplinary and grievance procedures.
  • To ensure Trust standards of recording and information governance are maintained.
  • To provide consultation and training in relation to Deaf mental health to a range of colleagues and professional groups as appropriate.
  • To ensure that all staff members are aware of current risk assessment procedures and management plans and fully engage in zoning.
  • To ensure regular auditing of the interventions carried out by nursing staff take place and that nursing staff reflect on practice.
  • To ensure that all staff members are familiar with and observe the provisions of the Mental Health Act, Care Programme Approach, maintain and observe Codes of Professional Conduct and other appropriate legislation.

Teaching, Training and Supervision

  • To receive regular clinical supervision from the Matron.
  • To receive professional supervision as directed by the Matron
  • To undertake mandatory and statutory training, supervision and annual appraisal as required by Trust policy.
  • To contribute and commit to undertaking an annual Development Review/appraisal.
  • To undertake personal development as identified in the Personal Development Plan (PDP).

Management, Recruitment, Policy and Service Development

  • To contribute to recruitment processes for the service and to chair interview panels for nursing recruitment.
  • With band 7 leads in service, to plan, organise and allocate staff with appropriate levels of skills and expertise to be care providers to selected groups of patients.
  • To support the band 7 in the Deaf service and ensure that staff performance/conduct is consistent with local and national guidelines (e.g. sickness/absence procedure, NMC code of conduct etc) and appropriately employ the disciplinary procedure where necessary.
  • To work with the Modern Matron and Team leaders in the development and implementation of clinical governance initiatives and policy review and implement the Nursing Strategy for CAMHS Services.
  • With the Band 7 in the Deaf service to ensure staff comply with mandatory training and undertake service related training.

Research and Service Evaluation

  • Within Trust and service clinical governance frameworks, contribute to audit and research as agreed by the CAMHS leadership and the SLM.
