Locum Consultant with an interest in Anal Neoplasia

Job summary

The Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is inviting interest for a 5PA Consultant in Anal Neoplasia. The post is designed for an existing consultant with an interest in Anal Neoplasia who may be able to accommodate these hours in order to undertake this post in addition to any other work they carry out, or for those wishing to work part time for a period (portfolio career). The postholder will be based at the internationally-renowned Homerton Anogenital Neoplasia Service (HANS).

This post will provide intensive training in High Resolution Anoscopy (HRA) with expectation that the post holder will embark on developing expertise in the field including ablative treatment with laser and electrocautery within clinic and potentially with work in the operating theatre. Most of the HRA clinics take place in rooms in Clifden House (sexual health) however HANS has 2.5 half day lists per week in the Day Stay Unit for more complex cases which are currently undertaken by Ms Tamzin Cuming (colorectal surgery) and Dr Julie Bowring (gynaecology). An interest in and history of participation in research is desirable. It will be expected that when sufficiently trained, the post holder will provide teaching and training, audit and quality improvement work in addition to research.

Main duties of the job

Clinical responsibilities

The post-holders will be expected to ensure the appropriate and safe management of HANS patients in theatre and in clinic when trained sufficiently to run solo HRA clinics.

A shared office space, including computer and appropriate secretarial support will be provided as well as access to remote working for administrative tasks.

Teaching and academic activity

The post holder will participate in the postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and training programme within the hospital. Research activity will be encouraged.

Management and clinical admin

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the development of the service within the directorate. The appointee will be expected to take part in the management and routine administrative duties associated with the care of their patients.

Continuing professional development

Continuing professional development is an integral part of this consultant post. The appointee will be encouraged to ensure that his/her full entitlement to study leave is taken. Attendance at anal neoplasia related academic activities and conferences will be encouraged.

About us

Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is an integrated care trust which provides hospital and community health services for Hackney, the City and surrounding communities. The Trust provides a full range of adult, older people's and children's services across medical and surgical specialties.

The hospital has five day-surgery theatres and six main operating theatres for all types of general surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, gynaecology, maxillo-facial, urology, ENT, obesity, bariatrics and obstetrics. We also have a surgical treatment room within the main theatres complex.

The trust provides some highly specialised tertiary services, including Homerton Anogenital Neoplasia service, bariatric surgery and the Regional Neurological Rehabilitation Unit It is one of London's designated perinatal centres and provides a range of highly specialised obstetric and neonatal intensive care services. Homerton Anogenital Neoplasia Service (HANS) is a tertiary referral service, even quaternary as the service is the largest in the UK offering diagnosis and treatment for anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) and associated lower anogenital tract precancerous conditions. The service receives referrals from across the UK and participates in and drives research in this field, as well as offering training proctorships in high resolution anoscopy (HRA) and running HRA courses.
