Continence Nurse - Children

Job summary

The post holder will work as a member of the Children's Continence Team, managing a caseload of children and young people in the community who require continence assessment, advice, and care. This includes home visits, clinics, and working closely with families, schools, and other professionals. The post holder will provide specialist advice, education, and support to children, families, and other health and social care professionals, ensuring high-quality, evidence-based care. Additional responsibilities include working with the Paediatric Specialist Nurse-Continence in the provision of continence products and management of enuresis alarms, supporting effective discharge planning, and transitional planning to adult services.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake holistic assessments and develop, implement, and review care plans for children with bladder and bowel dysfunction.
  • Provide specialist continence care, including advice on products, interventions, and management strategies.
  • Deliver care in a variety of settings (home, clinic, school), ensuring privacy, dignity, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Act as a resource and liaison between families, education personnel, health, social care, and voluntary agencies.
  • Safeguard children and young people, adhering to local and national safeguarding policies.
  • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical records in line with Trust and NMC standards.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and contribute to interprofessional communication.
  • Communicate effectively with children and families regarding continence, including children with special and/or additional needs.
  • Actively listen to parents, carers, children, and young people.
