About us
The Neonatal Department's long-standing designation as a Level 3 NICU service was endorsed by the Thames Regional Perinatal Group (TRPG) appraisal of the Perinatal Network and the London Neonatal ODN, and is one of the busiest Level 3 units in London. The Homerton Obstetric unit has a particularly high throughput of extremely preterm births, and the Neonatal Unit admits approximately 150 neonates per annum who are <30 weeks gestational age. There're increasing numbers of admissions of babies at 22-23 weeks gestation in line with the BAPM framework for management of extremely preterm infants. Several local problems, such as socio-economic deprivation, high prevalence of drug abuse and HIV carriage impact upon the workload.
The Homerton provides a total of 46 cots: 16 intensive and 8 high dependency cots and 22 special care cots. The Delivery Suite has 17 Delivery Rooms and 2 Obstetric Theatres. There are around 6000 births per year and 900 neonatal admissions, 18-20% of whom weigh <1500g. In excess of 8000 days per annum of medical intensive and high dependency care are provided. Most admissions for intensive care are from the NCEL Perinatal Network with small numbers of babies from further afield.
The Obstetric department provides a referral service to the Network for Fetal Diagnostic and Materno-Fetal medicine and has an established reputation in the early identification and management of high-risk pregnancies.
