Job summary

The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team who support HIV positive and negative men who have sex with men (MSM) who engage/or are at risk of engaging in sexualised drug use (chemsex). This includes men who use alcohol problematically within a sexual context. The post holder will provide, assistance and support to MSM in navigating the complex systems available by helping them build resilience and manage their mental, physical, and social care needs. The post-holder will provide short-term goal directed mentoring and counselling to raise their awareness specifically around risk reduction and behavioural change, using evidence-based tools such as Motivational Interviewing (MI) and provide advice around harm reduction. The post-holder will administer standardized measurement tools of drug use and emotional wellbeing as well as gather outcome measures regarding efficacy of provided interventions.

Main duties of the job

  • Assess severity of drug/alcohol use and sexual risks taking using standardised measures developed and utilised by the service.
  • To ascertain where service users are with regards to a change cycle, with particularly focus on motivation and readiness for change
  • When thresholds have been met, to engage the service user in a structured one-to-one intervention, that lasts no more than 6 sessions, with a focus on harm minimisation and risk reduction.
  • When certain thresholds have been exceeded, to refer on according to the established stepped care model, including onward referral to internal clinical psychology services or specialist drugs services/voluntary services.
  • Provide mentoring and support for service users by working through actions plans and reviewing servicer user needs.
  • To refer appropriately to emergency psychiatric or medical services when and if needed.
  • Participate in clinical supervision on a regular basis.
  • Be up-to-date and work in line with adult and vulnerable person safeguarding practices and referral pathways within HUH.
  • Maintain effective channels of communication with regards to service user interventions ensuring that service user confidentiality is upheld at all times.
  • Liaise in a professional manner with team members who work within the High Risk Sex service pathway within HSHS and wider management.
  • To maintain accurate records of all service users on a database.
