Job summary
This is a substantive post for a general radiologist with a subspecialist interest in Musculoskeletal (MSK) Imaging. The candidate must have extensive experience in MSK imaging and general radiology, a second area of subspecialist interest would be desirable but is not mandatory.
The successful applicant will be joining a highly motivated and enthusiastic team of 11 consultant radiologists. There will be an average of 8 PAs of direct clinical care and 2 PAs are allocated for supporting professional activities over a 4 day working week, with the possibility for additional PA's should the successful applicant wish to work over 5 days. All Consultants have the option of 1 day working from home should they wish.
Main duties of the job
Clinical responsibilities
- To provide, in conjunction with consultant colleagues, a comprehensive Radiology service.
- To provide a daily and an advisory out of hours service together with other Consultants in line with an agreed job plan with on call rota and prospective cover
- To maintain and promote team and multi-disciplinary working within the Radiology department.
- To participate in Governance process.
- To take part in continuing medical education activities
Teaching and academic activity:The post holder will participate in the postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and training programme within the hospital.
Research and development: The trust is keen to support high quality R&D and innovation. There are opportunities for consultant radiologists to take part in clinical trials and associated research.
Management and clinical audit: The appointee will be expected to take part in the management and routine administrative duties associated with their work and the supervision of junior medical staff. In addition, he or she will be expected to adopt an active role in the wider management arena within the directorate where appropriate.
Continuing professional development: Continuing professional development is an integral part of a consultant post. The appointee will be encouraged to ensure that his/her full entitlement to study leave is taken, as well as attend annual job plan review with the Clinical Lead/Associate Medical Director of the service.

It is anticipated the job plan will consist of: 2 sessions Ultrasound, 1.5 session MR, 2 sessions CT (1 acute CT and 1 session cold reporting), 0.5 session X-ray reporting/ Duty Radiologist, 1 session meetings/prep (monthly Ortho MDT and 0.5 MRI and Consultant meetings), 1 session On Call and 2 SPAs. Part time applications would be considered.
The post holder will be expected to be flexible and co-operative in accordance with the requirements of the departments.
The on call commitment varies depending upon staffing levels within the department but will not exceed 1 in 10 weekends.
An allowance of 1 PA for on call is provided in the job plan. Following an on call weekend consultants are not given clinical duties on the following Monday. The post is resident on call on weekday evenings until 19:00. Weekend on call duties require on site presence for minimum of 8 hours on a Saturday. Sunday on call work may potentially be carried out from home (all consultants have home workstations).
Overnight scans (19:00- 08:00) are outsourced to a private company 7 days a week. An adequate home broadband speed is required in order for off-site weekend on call work and to facilitate home working. Currently all Consultants have 1 day per week working from home (subject to staffing levels).
Changes to these arrangements are possible as part of 7 day working.
Plain Imaging Reporting
The consultant body reports approximately 15% of the acquired x-ray images with a well- established team of reporting radiographers undertake the remaining 85%.
Ultrasound
The successful candidate would be expected to be competent in general ultrasound imaging, including abdominal US and DVT scans, as well as dedicated musculoskeletal imaging including joint injections. Experience in neck/soft tissue US and fine needle aspiration is beneficial but not essential.
Computed Tomography
There is 1 acute CT session in this post, which involves reporting of all ED and IP CT and MRI performed during the session. There is also time allocated for cold CT for reporting of outpatient scans.
Expertise in general body and neuroradiology imaging will be required for the reporting of adult patients.
MRI
Experience in adult MR reporting, in particular MRI Brains and spines, is required. The successful candidate must be proficient in subspecialist MSK reporting, experience of MR arthrography would be beneficial.
Fluoroscopy
Experience of fluoroscopy for arthrography (predominantly shoulders) would be desirable but is not essential.
Intervention
It would be desirable if the applicant is competent at basic interventional procedures, eg US or CT guided biopsies and drainages of intra-abdominal collections or ascites.
