Job summary

This is a locum post which is an appointment by the department of Stroke Medicine at Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (HUH) and is designed to support the continued development of stroke and TIA services at HUH, which has been designated as an Acute Stroke Unit within the London Stroke Network.

At present HUH manages approximately 164 stroke inpatients per annum and in the region of 327 TIA referrals. It serves a population base of 280,000 and is currently performing consistently well in the upper quartile of the National Sentinel Stroke Audit for clinical activity. The multi-disciplinary stroke service aims to ensure all stroke patients are admitted - when appropriate - directly to the unit and all TIA referrals are seen within 24 hours across a 5 day week initially.

The current stroke service comprises a 24-bedded unit and provides multi-disciplinary inpatient acute care and early rehabilitation after stroke for patients of all ages from City and Hackney CCG. There is a specialist team of doctors, nurses, therapists (physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists) psychologists and dieticians working with the patients

Main duties of the job

The below are specific of Homerton University Hospital and at Royal London Hospital.

To share in the provision of acute stroke service including inpatient rehabilitation.

  • To share in the provision of outpatient TIA services locally.
  • To provide patients with rapid access to Hyperacute stroke services at Barts Health where necessary.
  • There will be no on-call commitment at the Homerton site. Out of hours cover will be provided by the hospital medical teams.
  • To support the lead clinician for stroke in furthering service developments.
  • To be actively involved in stroke research by enrolling patients in currently opened trials (national and international research studies as part of the National Stroke Research Network and the NIHR portfolio) as well as promoting new studies on site.
  • To provide a consultant-led comprehensive acute stroke service together with the rest of the consultant team.
  • To participate in the Stroke Thrombolysis and Thrombectomy Consultant on call rota at The Royal London Hospital.
  • To support the Stroke Clinical Lead and Clinical Director in advancing service developments and improvements.
  • To aid and facilitate the rapid transfer of stroke patients from BLT to the Homerton along the relevant pathway.
  • To be actively involved in stroke research by enrolling patients in currently opened trials (national and international research studies as part of the National Stroke Research Network and the NIHR portfolio) as well as promoting new studies on site.

  • Stroke experience (at equivalent level to Stroke CCST)

Desirable

  • Higher Degree (MSc, MD or PhD)
  • CCST in Stroke Medicine

Experience

Essential

  • Ability to practice independently in Acute Medicine and Stroke and offer expert clinical opinion on a range of stroke and general medicine related problems

Desirable

  • Expertise in the leadership of an acute care team or stroke care team
  • Experience in emergency or critical care medicine
