The Critical Care Outreach Team at Homerton University Hospital is committed to patient safety. We are currently looking for a Band 7 Senior Nurse/ Charge Nurse to join our dynamic team.
This position will allow the successful applicant to work alongside an established and experienced team, which is looking to expand. We provide high quality and professional services for the deteriorating patient across all specialities. You will be required to make assessments and interventions for the acutely ill patient in hospital, supporting healthcare professionals in the recognition and management of the deteriorating patient in response to acute illness.
For this challenging and rewarding role we are looking for proactive, enthusiastic and caring individuals. The possession of excellent interpersonal skills is explicit as well as a robust clinical background within the acute critical care setting. Experience of working at Band 6 level is essential as is a Critical Care or equivalent professional qualification. You should have excellent teaching skills, hold current ALS/ EPALS +/APLS certification and ability to demonstrate structured teaching skills. Commitment to and evidence of personal development is also required.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will work in a nursing team led by the Lead Nurse for Critical Care Outreach. This team will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, nursing, medical and managerial colleagues to provide high quality innovative healthcare to patients who are critically ill outside the ICU setting. The post holder will be responsible for developing critical care outreach services in line with national priorities and provide expert nursing interventions for patients:
- Prior to admission to the ICU
- During transfer to the ICU
- During transfer from the ICU
- Following discharge from ICU
- Following discharge from hospital.
Primarily the team will act as a support for ward based nursing and junior medical staff in caring for the sicker patient. Services provided by the team will enhance the care of the critically ill patient prior to and post intensive care, developing systems of seamless care. It will also optimise the condition of patients at risk of deterioration in ward areas with the potential to avoid ICU admission. As a team post holders would be expected to:
- Facilitate skill development of ward based staff to enable early identification of patients at risk of deterioration
- Identify learning needs in relation to the management of post ICU patients and devise educational programmes to meet such needs
- Provide a direct referral system for all doctors, nurses and therapy staff to critical care outreach services
