Job summary
The Matron role is the cornerstone of improving the quality of patient care. This is achieved through visible inclusive leadership and engagement with patients and families, frontline staff and senior management teams. (CNO England, 2020). The post holder will be assigned to specific Clinical Speciality Groups (CSG) or speciality specific departments. The post holder will be accountable for ensuring compliance with regulatory and best practice standards, whilst striving to deliver the Trust strategic objectives. Working in partnership with the CSG lead and Speciality manager, the matron will focus upon 5 specific areas of responsibility: Inclusive leadership, professional standards and accountability Governance, patient safety and quality Patient experience, pathways and outcomes, reducing health inequalities Workforce planning and resource management Staff engagement and wellbeing The post holder is expected to keep up to date on all professional issues related to nursing, midwifery and AHP practice including relevant research findings and the broader NHS.
Main duties of the job
The matron responsibilities align with the Matrons handbook (2020) in which the original responsibilities of the Matron Charter (2004) have been modernised to reflect the growth in the role: Leadership, professional standards and accountability Governance, patient safety and quality Workforce planning and resource management Patient experience, pathways and outcomes, reducing health inequalities Staff engagement and wellbeing Education, training, research and development Collaborative working and clinical effectiveness Service improvement and transformation Performance and operational oversight (including Finance, budget and business planning) Digital and information technology The matron will work closely with the care group clinical leader and service manager to support the delivery of the service and support the delivery of agreed key performance indicators. This will include leading, supporting and managing designated staff in their performance achievements. The Matron will, when required, represent the Care Group, Clinical Speciality Group and relevant profession in the wider health and social care economy and at national events. The Matron will have the relevant clinical experience and be clinically credible in the clinical specialty they are working in.
