Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic Cardiology Consultant locum to join our team at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust and principally support the Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC). The successful candidate will provide high-quality clinical care, contribute to service development, and educate and train resident staff.

Main duties of the job

This consultant cardiology role involves delivering a comprehensive, highquality cardiology service across inpatient and outpatient settings. The post holder will take shared responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis, and management of cardiological conditions, including consultant-of-the-week inpatient cover, outpatient clinics across multiple sites, and provision of Advice and Guidance to local GPs. The role includes developing a subspecialty interest (such as advanced imaging or cardiac devices), undertaking diagnostic coronary angiography, and contributing to modern cardiology pathways, including Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs), MDTs, and advanced practice support. Active participation in clinical governance, audit, MDTs with cardiothoracic surgery, and mortality and morbidity meetings is expected. In addition, the post holder will contribute to teaching, training, supervision of junior staff, and undergraduate and postgraduate education, alongside involvement in CPD and clinical governance activities. The role carries professional, managerial, and data governance responsibilities, with a strong emphasis on patient safety, communication, equality, confidentiality, and maintaining the highest clinical and professional standards within the Trust.

  • Provision with consultant colleagues of a cardiology service to PAH with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the Department.
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients with cardiological illnesses.
  • To share with colleagues, responsibility for the day-to-day management of outpatients attending PAH and outlying clinics at SMH and HEH.
  • To provide safe and high-quality inpatient cover through the role of ‘Consultant of the week’.
  • To provide Advice & Guidance to local GPs through a formal on-line communication platform.
  • To develop a specific sub-specialty interest within Cardiology, for example, advanced imaging / devices. Furthermore, to aid the CDC and pathways aligned to diagnostics including support for the ANPs, Clinics and MDTs.
  • The appointee will be expected to have appropriate skills in diagnostic coronary angiography and undertake diagnostic work in The Cardiac Angiography Suite.
  • Actively participating in both Departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit.
  • Actively participating in the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings held jointly with cardio-thoracic (CTC) surgeons from the Essex CTC.
  • Active engagement with the monthly Mortality and Morbidity meeting.

  • Ensure excellent verbal and written communication with all patients and their carers, students and all members of staff directly or indirectly involved with the department
  • Professional supervision, management, teaching and training of junior staff
  • Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and for contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally.
  • Participating in medical audit, the Trusts' Clinical Governance processes and in Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
  • Managerial, including budgetary, responsibilities where appropriate.
  • A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.
